Wells to an arm injury. His
status was not known at
press time.
With three grapplers out
and already forced to for
feit in three other weight
classes, Westfield’s record
suffered dramatically.
The Hornets already didn’t
have bodies to fill the 125-,
130- and 189-pound weight
divisions.
Then they lost Culpepper
at 275 pounds, Rowland at
152 and Wells at 160 to hurt
their chances even more.
Following a match
Monday against David
Emanuel (results pending),
the Hornets were slated to
take on Windsor and First
Presbyterian in a dual
Thursday.

able to get an advantage or

In the second period,
Johnson started in the down

Helton quickly took control
and got the pin 26 seconds
into the period.
In all, Houston County
had four of the six final
ists in the Eagles Classic.
The Bears had grapplers in
the finals in the first three
weight classes, 103, 112, 119
as well as 275.
Matt Dick was pinned
at 5:06 in his 103 match
against West Laurens’ Derek
Bostin.
Andrew Ngyuen (112)
fell to Sequoyah’s Jacob
Thompson midway through
the third period when the
score reached 17-2 and was
called a technical fall, and
Chris Milner was pinned at
3:37 by West Laurens’ Justin
Harvey at 3:37.
Helton’s victory was the
only one for wrestlers from
Houston County schools.
“Our guys did a good job,”
said Houston County head
coach Heath Burch. “We
brought 11 (wrestlers) and
all of them made it to the
second day.”
Perry’s Chad Shelton
reached the finals in the 135
class via two pins and a 6-5
decision to face his nemesis
Germany Coleman of West
Laurens.
“West Laurens has always
given me a bad go,” the
senior said. “I’m going to
have to train harder in prac
tice. Late in matches I’m
getting worn down.”
Shelton fell to Coleman,
getting pinned at 2:38.
Shelton has a 21-4 record,
all of those losses coming
from West Laurens. He is
returning after missing last
season with a broken foot.
“This year it’s only a
sprained thumb,” Shelton
said.
Northside’s sole entry
in the finals was freshman
Scott Marshall at 140.
“Marshall did a good job,”
said his head coach Dan
Kelly. “This is always a tough
tournament, and he knew he
would be facing some tough
competition.”
Marshall advanced through
the first two rounds with
pins and made the finals
with a 12-2 major decision
against Jenkins’ William

Sequoyah’s Bradley Banks
ended Marshall’s champion

BEARS

the other’s locker room
bugged at the half because
they both appeared to come
out with the same game
plan to start the third: Hit
3-pointers.
In fact, four of the first
five shots taken by both
teams were from outside
the arc. The only variation
was the Demons’ Pierre
Miller’s jumper near the
free-throw line. He missed
but was fouled and then
sank both opportunities.
Encased around that was
a trey from Warner Robins’
Dominique Davenport - to
open the quarter - one by
Miller and one each from
Houston County’s Harriel
and Reggie Pero.
The smoke cleared from
that procession and the rest
of the period - and by the
way, the Bears led most of
those eight minutes - with
Houston County up 44-38
GIRLS
From page 1B
Warner Robins girls head
basketball coach Tom
Mobley. “It’s not region
but it’s still a rivalry game,
and you always want to win
those.”
Apparently the Lady
Bears had the same thought
because they “hung around
and hung around,” as
Houston County girls head
basketball coach Sid Baxley
said, until the second quar
ter and then began to make
a push for the lead.
They were 6-of-ll from
the field in the third quar
ter while Warner Robins
was 3-of-11.
As a result, the Lady Bears
outscored the Demonettes
16-8 during that span and
cut the lead down to nine,
42-33, heading into the final
eight minutes.
Then they made it seven
when Candice Clark hit a
basket to open the final
period.
Warner Robins pushed it
back up and to 10 with a
little more than three min
utes to play before the Lady
Bears began to nip at it
again.
Ray-Donee Jones hit a
3-pointer with 2:47 to go
cut the Demonettes lead to
four, 48-44.
But that was to be as
close as they could get as
Warner Robins - mainly on
free throws as they went
to the line 10 times during
the period and hit 10-of-21
opportunities - outscored
them eight to three to the
wire.
Despite the loss it wasn't
all bad, Baxley said.
“We had some really posi
tives in the second half,” he
said. “We’re just so young ...
so new ... one will step this

heading into the final leg.
Houston County held its
edge until just about the
midway point, and when
Warner Robins converted
on six straight trips down
the court. Most of that
came from Alton Sanders
who accounted for four of
those baskets consecutively.
He also scored 12 of his 25
points during that period
and gave the Demons their
first lead in a while, 48-47,
at the 4:10 mark.
As had been the norm,
however, it didn’t last. They
finished regulation tied at
58.
Warner Robins took the
lead on a basket to open the
extra period before Houston
County took it back, 61-60,
with 2:10 remaining.
Then they traded it
- back to the number one
again - three times. The
Bears’ Warren Gregory

biggest cushion in overtime
when, after he had drawn a
trio of Demon defenders, he
saw Harriel breaking to the
basket. He threw a bullet
and Harriel put it in for an
easy layup.
That put Houston County
up 67-64. Davenport hit a
bucket from an inch inside
the 3-point line - if not
shorter - with :26.9 to go to
make it 67-66 before Reggie
Pero was fouled and sank
both to seal the victory for
the Bears.
“We really needed that,”
said Houston County boys
head basketball coach Greg
Nix. “We entered the Bear
Brawl 7-3 and then lost
to Perry. Then we went to
Dublin and slopped it up
and lost to Colquitt (72-68
Friday to even their Region
1-AAAAA record at 1-1).
“This makes us 8-7 and
it’s a rivalry, so it’s always
a good win.”
“We’re still trying to find
our chemistry.”
