LOCAL
WALKER
From page 1A
of Atlanta work.
Walker’s hand can be seen
throughout the county, from
improvements at local
schools and roads, to big
projects like the Georgia
National Fairgrounds and
Agricenter.
On a night meant to cap
Walker’s political career,
Perdue gave that cap a
twist, announcing that he is
releasing from the budget
$1.9 million slated for the
state park Walker worked to
bring to south Houston
County.
Walker pumped his fist in
the air in celebration.
The announcement
brought the crowd to its
feet, their hands beating
together strongly for this
last feather in Walker’s well
plumed hat.
It was but one of several
standing ovations this night,
as the people showed their
love for Larry.
Although billed as a roast,
the program often fell short
of the mark, as many of the
speakers only half-heartedly
poked fun at the man they
so admire.
Perry Mayor James
Worrall took no jabs at all,
instead using his time to
present Walker with a
framed copy of a resolution
of appreciation passed by
the City Council.
His colleague to the north,
Warner Robins Mayor
Donald Walker, also took it
easy on the state represen
tative, though he did answer
the frequently asked ques
tion.
Are they related?
“I tell people it depends on
how he’s acting,” Donald
Walker said.
Larry Walker’s rebuttal:

Houston County Superior
Court Judge George Nunn
read one of his (in)famous
doggerel poems, and former
University of Georgia foot
ball head coach Ray Goff, an
old friend of Walker’s, ram
bled like a stand-up comedi
an.
Walker chided Nunn for
biting the hand that got him
his job.
As for Goff: “The only rea
son I put up with him is
because he’s as big as he is.”
Others who made up
Walker’s hand-picked panel
included Foster Rhodes,
Superior Court Judge Brant

THE HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL
now Republican Houston
County Commissioner Tom
McMichael made a few cut
ting remarks, which Walker
answered with one swift
stab:
“He raised the intelligence
level of both parties when he
switched.”
Still, maybe this night it
was McMichael who put the
right words together, telling
Walker that, while he may
be stepping down from elect
ed office, there is more he
will never step away from.
“You will never stop serv
ing your fellow man, and for
that we are grateful,” he
said.
An example?
Look no further than the
alternate purpose of this
night’s celebration - the
event was a fund-raiser for
the Big Indian Creek
cleanup project.
Walker may be retired,
but he ain’t done working.
