C'ville talks about garbage options
By TERESA D. SOUTHERN
HHJ Staff Writer
CENTERVILLE - In its
department work session
this week, the city of
Centerville discussed
whether Centerville
Sanitation Company, which
has the city contract for
garbage disposal, might use
the local landfill.
The city was asked by
Houston County Public
Works Director Tommy
Stalnaker to consider using
Houston County’s landfill.
Currently, Centerville
Sanitation Company trans
ports Centerville garbage to
a privately owned collection
station in Byron.
Larry Coy, owner of
Centerville Sanitation
Company, objected to the
proposal, saying he couldn’t
afford to transport garbage

Bell said this person will
be responsible for develop
ing and hiring several new
people in education, partic
ularly “those who see from
a learner’s perspective to
focus on the how to teach
from the learner’s perspec
tive.”
The school raised over
$230,000 dollars in private
funds and retained a con
sultant to focus on a
methodology that is learn
ing-centered. Funding will

atomic bomb but they are

and we need to maintain
close contact with them.”
Marshall said that
Pakistan is making a strong
effort to clean out their bor
der area with Afghanistan.
“They have 70,000 troops
clearing out the border
areas and have cleared one
entire province of terror
ists,” he said. “Some ana
lysts think that the push by
Pakistan has forced (Osama)
Bin Laden back across the
border into Afghanistan.”
Marshall said that it is
important for members of
Congress to keep in close
contact with developments
in the Middle East.
“Every time I take one of
these trips it is very gruel
ing, but I have learned an
awful lot about issues facing

Charles Watson, 40, of
Warner Robins. Hutto’s
vehicle continued off the
road, stopping at North
Tamie Circle.
The road way was closed
as the injured Gatliff was to
be life-flighted from the
scene. He could not be stabi
lized due to his injuries and
was taken to nearby Perry
Hospital by Houston County
EMS to stabilize him for
transport to Macon.
Gatliff had major surgery
at The Medical Center of
Central Georgia in Macon,
and, according to the report,
“remains in a coma with lit

to the Houston landfill,
which is located near the
Pulaski County line along
Ga. 247.
“In 1999 the cost of fuel
was 89 cents a gallon,” Coy
said. “At present it’s $1.89 a
gallon, and there is no
recourse for my fuel and
maintenance costs.”
Coy said the disadvan
tages of using the county’s
landfill is the distance it
takes for trucks to travel
there and back, and the
hours the landfill is open.
The landfill currently used
is open 24 hours and the
county landfill is only open
during business hours.
Councilman Cameron
Andrews asked why
Stalnaker would ask this of
the city as a favor.
“Why bring up something
Georgia, and the college
will reallocate $300,000 for
the 2006 fiscal year toward
the program.
“We’re on the move,” Bell
said. “There are so many
students from Houston
County and I know many of
them would like to be
teachers.”
Education students will
serve in practicums at
many schools around the
county.
“We are making sure the
design of the program will
meet students needs and
me as a member of the
Armed Forces Committee,”
he said. “If for no other rea
son, it is important for us to
come over and tell or allies
and our soldiers that they
are doing a great job. I wish
every American had the
opportunity to do what I am
doing now and say ‘thank
you’ to their people over
here. Everyone would be
proud to see what they are
doing.”
Marshall closed by shar
ing his thoughts on the
upcoming elections in Iraq.
“The elections will occur
and I think they should
occur as scheduled,” he said.
“They offer the possibility of
change and they will get the
Iraqis involved in protecting
their own vital interests. It
is time for the Iraqis who
agree with us to step for
ward and make themselves
known.”
Hutto has been charged
with serious injury by motor
vehicle, weaving, failure to
maintain lane, DUI-alco
hol/drugs (fourth time), too
fast for conditions, reckless
driving and multiple federal
commercial vehicle viola
tions.
In November, Alexander
said the charges in the case
would depend on the sce
nario of the victim.
Alexander and fellow traf
fic officers were on scene the
following day reconstructing
the accident and taking
measurements. The driver
had tried to explain what he
thought happened. None of
information checked out,
according to the deputy’s
report.

Andrews said.
The issue was only a dis
cussion and tabled until
Mayor Ronnie Brand - who
was absent - could be pres
ent to add his opinion.
Also at the meeting:
• The city is purchasing
new water meters at a cost
of $79 per meter totaling
$39,816 for 504 meters.
City Manager John Harley
requested a change in the
city budget to absorb these
costs, which was approved.
• The city is close to pur
