MLB adopts steroid polcy
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP)
- With some of its biggest stars
under suspicion and lawmakers
demanding action. Major League
Baseball adopted a tougher ste
roid-testing program that will sus
pend first-time offenders for 10
days and randomly test players
year-round.
The agreement was hailed by
baseball management and its
union as a huge step forward
but was criticized by some as
not going far enough because the
penalties are less harsh than those
in Olympic sports and amphet
amines were not banned.
A first positive test would result
in a penalty of 10 days, a second
positive test in a 30-day ban, a
third positive in a 60-day pen
alty, and a fourth positive test in
a one-year ban - all without pay.
A player who tests positive a fifth
time would be subject to discipline
determined by the commissioner.
Under the previous agreement,
a first positive test resulted only in
treatment, and a second positive
test was subject to a 15-day sus
pension. Only with a fifth positive
test would a player subject to a
one-year ban.
A's exec opts on stadum
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - An
Oakland Athletics executive mull
ing an option to buy the team has
decided to concentrate on getting
a baseball-only stadium built here
instead of moving the As to San
Jose, one of his colleagues said.
Los Angeles developer Lewis
Wolff, vice president for venue
development for the Athletics, is
“totally focused on the Oakland
situation and seeing that through,"
said Sam Spear, a senior con
sultant for the A's who is in close
contact with Wolff.
Wolff said he will make his deci
sion whether to buy the team from
Steve Schott and Ken Hofmann in
the next three months.
Foundation to give SIOO,OOO
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - The
Tiger Woods Foundation is giv
ing SIOO,OOO to tsunami relief
efforts in Asia, and the PGA Tour
is matching that amount.
Woods' foundation and the
tour are donating the money to
Give2Asia, with the money direct
ed toward two groups aimed at
providing sanctuary and relief to
children affected by the tsunami.
Bryant spratas ankle
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Lakers
star Kobe Bryant sustained what
the team called a severely sprained
right ankle midway through the first
quarter of Los Angeles’ 98-94 win
over the Cleveland Cavaliers and
had to be helped off the court.
X-rays were negative, but Bryant
will have an MRI on Friday, team
spokesman John Black said.
Bryant, the NBAs second-lead
ing scorer with a 28.2-point aver
age, was injured when he landed
on Ira Newbie's right foot while
going for a rebound under the
Cavaliers' basket. Newbie was
called for a foul on the play.
Bryant immediately grabbed
his ankle before teammate Brian
Grant and trainer Gary Vitti helped
him off the court and into the
Staples Center tunnel, where
Grant and injured Los Angeles
forward Devean George carried
him into the locker room.
Foderor, Agassi draw top
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP)
- Defending champion Roger
Federer and four-time winner
Andre Agassi could meet in the
quarterfinals of the Australian
Open after both landed in the
top quarter of the draw for the
season's first Grand Slam event.
Top-ranked Federer won the
Australian Open, Wimbledon and
U.S. Open last season, the first
man since Mats Wilander in 1988
to win three of the season’s four
majors.
The 23-year-old Swiss star will
open against Fabrice Santoro of
France and could meet Thailand's
Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand
in the third round, Agassi in the
quarterfinals and 2004 runner-up
Marat Safin, seeded fourth, in the
semifinals.
In the women’s draw, top
ranked Lindsay Davenport, the
2000 champion, could meet
eighth-seeded Venus Williams in
the quarterfinals and French Open
champion Anastasia Myskina,
ranked third, in the semifinals.
Agassi is seeded eighth.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -
Michelle Kwan earned three per

ning the short program in the U.S.
Figure Skating Championships.
When Kwan saw her marks,
she gasped and nudged coach
Rafael Artunian. When the crowd
clapped, she grinned and punched
the air like a prize fighter.
And they took her a step closer
to history. If she wins the free skate
Saturday night, she'll win her ninth
U.S. title and tie the record set by
Maribel Vinson Owen in the 1920 s
and 19305.
Olympic bronze medalist Tim
Goebel won the men’s short pro

L.A. Lakers 98, Cleveland 94
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Kobe Bryant
went down hard and did not return, though
the Los Angeles Lakers were able to defeat
Leßron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers
without him. Bryant sustained what the
team called a severely sprained right ankle
and had to be helped off the court early.
X-rays were negative, but Bryant will have
an MRI on Friday.
Rockets 94, Nets 85
HOUSTON - Bob Sura scored a career
high 35 points, including a game-clinching
3-pointer with 1:02 left in overtime, to lead
the surging Houston Rockets to a 94-
85 victory over the New Jersey Nets on
Thursday night.
Kings 107, Jazz 93
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Peja
Stojakovic scored 27 points, Chris Webber
had 23 points and 15 rebounds, and Brad
Miller had 21 points on 9-of-10 shooting
for the Kings, who had just nine players in
uniform for the second straight game.
Mike Bibby sat out with a sprained ankle,
and the lost Greg Ostertag and Maurice
Evans to injuries during a physical game
At that time I asked point
blank: “Is Conley in trou
ble?” The response: “No.”
And then Scott was select
ed.
I’m not questioning his
credentials. He is obviously
a great coach and person
and I hope and wish him the
best, I really do. I pledge my
full support.
I just didn’t understand
how the job could be given to
someone on Conley’s origi
nal staff, someone Conley
himself brought in, if the
goal was to move in a differ
ent direction.
Further, I didn’t under
stand how he got it over
Dexter Copeland, when
Scott had no head coaching
experience. (I know - it’s
like Conley said: “Someone,
somewhere has to give you a
chance.”)
In comparison, Copeland
(as most know) came from
Warner Robins and as
Twiggs County’s head coach
had picked up 32 wins in
the past three years alone
(granted it was at the single-
A level). He is also black and
the timing to me seemed
perfect to finally bring a
minority head coach to the
county.
I don’t mean to downplay
the weight dealing with the
players themselves might
have had (I’ve been told by
two sources - to quote one:
“Nobody cares for those kids
like Andy.”) but how could
Scott compete with that?
And then he said it.

“I’m young.”
It didn’t dawn on me at
first but driving home it
did.
Perry may have just been
looking for a new image.
Look at Conley. Everything
about him is old school. From
his grandfatherly appear
ance (still a ton of hair more
than me) to what he believes
to the decisions he’s made
on the field, Conley can be
seen a pure traditionalist.
He should have been a
perfect fit and up until now
he might have been.
After all, Perry is small
town USA - cozy, neighborly,
right out of “Remember the
Titans.” (And whose band
was in the movie?)
But Warner Robins is
knocking. Scratch that,
Warner Robins - in terms of
encroachment - is beating
on the door. Conley himself
has already predicted AAAA
(he was so looking forward
to it, too) is just a street cor
ner away.
I hate to use the NFL as
a comparison but just look
at how much was made
about the differences in
age and style between the
now retired Dan Reeves and
today’s flashy Falcons under
a youthful Jim Mora Jr.
That’s the image I believe
Perry is after (proof might
very well be in another
statement Scott made about
bringing “excitement” to the
program), and that’s what I
believe has befallen Chuck
Conley.
It’s pure speculation. I
can’t emphasize that enough.
But it would go a long way in
explaining things, and unless
someone with authority calls
and tells me different, that’s
what I’m going with.
Unlike Scott, I’m not
young enough to wait.
