Houston County's Nick Smith had to undergo some contorted maneuvering to beat his
Baldwin opponent, Michael Felciano, in their 112-pound match, but he did so, 5-3.

less than 30 seconds.
Warner Robins head coach
David Bruce was happy with
his team’s performance.
“We’re a real young team,”
he said. “We have nine ninth
graders (out of 14 weight
classes), and they’re working
hard.
“This is the best we’ve
wrestled all year,” he added.
“We had intensity and got
after them.

offensive team.”
The Lady Hornets are
averaging just a little more
than 40 points a game, but
they are allowing opponents
to score 51 points. With the
exception of its five-point
loss to Mount de Sales, 43-
38, each of its losses have
been by 10 points or more.
“We have trouble with
anybody who puts on defen
sive pressure,” Eubanks
said. “We make a lot of turn
overs.”
His problem is that he has
a young team. Ashley Gray
is the only senior on the
team. He starts a freshman,
Mason Moreland, at point
guard.
Junior Lee Ann Sexton
is the team’s leading scorer
with 11.6 points per game.
A.C. Wojohn follows with
10.6 then the averages drop
off drastically with not
another player above five
points per g&rae.
Wojohn does average a
sterling 8.6 rebounds a game
followed by Gray’s 6.3, but
the individual assist aver
ages are way down at 1.8 for
team leader Liza Pierce.
With only four teams in the
region, Westfield is assured
of making the playoffs but
as Eubanks pointed out, the
number four team must face
the number one team from
4-AAA and that would be
George Walton, currently
undefeated at 14-0.
In the boys bracket, the
Hornets face the same chal
lenge: Overcoming a 4-6
record.
Westfield boys head bas
ketball coach Duane Hunter
went to see Sherwood
defeated Baldwin 66-11.
According to Bruce, only
three teams from Area 1-
AAAA - unlike the seven
previously thought - were
competing in the Area Duals
Friday and Saturday.
They are Lee County, Ware
County and Northside. The
top two teams will advanced
to the state team wrestling
championships.
Houston County’s head
coach Heath Burch, Area
1-AAAAA, did not sched
ule an area tournament. He
said that “teams” with the
best two winning records
recently and came back
impressed.
“They looked good,”
he said. “Sherwood and
Deerfield looked pretty
strong.”
Hunter and the Hornets
spent the Christmas break
in conditioning.
“Conditioning is getting
better,” Hunter said. “We’re
trying to switch defenses.
We’re able to play a little
more zone.”
Thanks to a blowout win
over Byne, Hunter was also
able to get his bench some
much needed playing time.
He had been restricted to
using mostly eight, he said.
“The biggest thing is that
we keep improving,” Hunter
said. “We have to improve
decision making.”
His case in point was last
week’s loss to FPD. Hunter

wanted his team to slow the
tempo, but-they continued
to play at FPD’s pace.
“I was pleased with the
team’s effort, but we didn’t
play smart,” he said.
Westfield will get a readi
ness check when it faces off
against Sherwood next week
but before then, the Hornets
will get in a couple more non
region contests, one against
John Milledge and the other
versus Mount de Sales.
Westfield does have one
ace, Jesse Revis. He is aver
aging 20 points a game and
his 32 points against Byne
Monday night included six
treys.
Region opponents will
have to account for him and
Hunter is hoping that will
also give Bryn Collins and
Daniel Peake some open
looks.

Official's night turns harrowing
By RON COOK
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
SCOTTDALE, Pa. - The
notation in high school bas
ketball official Ron Bell’s
2004 date book is striking if
only because it is so unnec
essary.
Scrawled in heavy black
letters in the little box
for Feb. 6, right above
his assignment for the
Hampton-Deer Lakes boys’
game that afternoon, is:
BAD DAY/RON HURT
“Ah, my mother did that,”
Bell said, rolling his eyes.
Like he needs any remind
ers.
Bell knows Feb. 6 was a
bad day each morning when
he wakes up and his neck,
shoulders and back ache,
lingering effects, he says
from being body-slammed
headfirst to the Deer Lakes’

parent of a Hampton High

“They tell me I’m lucky
that my neck wasn’t bro
ken,” Bell said. “Well, you
know what? I don’t feel so
lucky.”
Bell knows Feb. 6 was
a bad day when it’s time
to go to work at nearby

make it. He hasn’t been

enjoys most he says is the
personal relationships he
has built.
“I’m helping golfers
achieve goals and creating
new golfers in the game,”
he said. “There’s a lot to the
game of golf. It can teach
you so much. It’s my job
to bring new people to the
game and help them con
tinue to improve.”
He pointed out that a

a little better - still isn’t
where it needs to be.”
Bell knows Feb. 6 was a
bad day each time he has
to ask his mother Stella or
his son Jeffrey or his uncle
Ted, who is 85, for a ride
to see his neurologist in
Uniontown, Pa.
For 25 years, he said he
loved every second of offi
ciating basketball games in
the winter and umpiring
baseball and softball games
in the spring and summer,
not because of the $35 or
SSO he would make for a
game, but because of the
kids.
And now? If he’s really
lucky and one of his ref
eree buddies can swing by
and pick him up, he’ll go
to a game and file a writ
ten evaluation of the offi
cials for his Westmoreland
County officials chapter.
Peter Dukovich, the
Hampton High School par
ent accused of body-slam
ming Bell, was scheduled
to go on trial Tuesday in
Allegheny County Common
Pleas Court. He faces
charges of simple assault,
assaulting a sports official,
disorderly conduct and
reckless endangerment.
Bell, who turned 58 New
Year’s Day, said he was pre-
to learn about people. Are
they honest? Do they have
self-control and will they
quit or keep going when the
game goes against them?
“It’s the only sport where
you’re your own referee,”
Goggin said. “It really does
reveal the man or woman
behind the club.”
If he can teach one thing
to his students, however, it
would be to relax.
“They play with too much
tension,” Goggin said.
“They also need to focus on
their short game. The short

Tip-off had been moved to
4 p.m. because of an inci
dent between the schools
the season before. Only par

allowed to attend.
What Bell said he didn’t
expect was to be attacked
from the stands.
The incident started with
a hard foul in the third
quarter. Pushes and shoves
quickly turned to punches.
“The last thing I remem
ber is being upside down
over the guy’s head and my
feet dangling in the air,”
Bell said. “I think the guy
watched too much W.W.E.”
Bell was taken by ambu

released several hours later.
His life, he said, hasn’t been
the same since.
“Post-concussion syn

Bell said.
Bell has his 2005 date
