P&Z reverses decision
on Bonaire rezoning
By RAY UGHTNER
HHJ Staff Writer
WARNER ROBINS -
Despite objections from area
residents, the Houston
County Planning
Commission voted 3-2 to
reverse its original unani
mous decision to deny the
request for commercial zon
ing on Azalea Avenue in
Bonaire.
Planning Director Tim
Andrews explained that the
Houston County Board of
Commissioners sent the
request back to the planning
commission as some infor
mation in the original pres
entation was left out - some
properties in the area being
zoned commercial, including
another one owned by the
applicant.
Residents pointed out the
commercial use of the irriga
tion place and antique shop
were discussed at the previ
ous hearing. Both of those
rezoning were from 10 years
ago or more.
Area residents objected to
the commercial rezoning
and the location of a mini
storage warehouse in the
residential area. The
request by James Farr
would rezone the land from
R-Ag (residential agricultur
al) to C-2 commercial.
Farr wants to build anoth
er self-storage facility as an
overflow for his location

across the road. The rear of
the parcel is adjacent to
Bonaire Estates at one point
and it is down the street
from Bonaire Elementary
School, where residents
claimed students ride their
bikes home from school.
Residents were concerned
about what else could come
in there with the C-2 zoning
and the proximity of homes
to the commercial site. They
were also concerned about
their property values and
questioned the purchase
prices of the land that was
only appraised at $24,000 by
the tax assessor.
Farr’s attorney Roy
Cowart, who previous
served on the Planning &
Zoning Commission, said
the area is going commer
cial. He said their property
values would go up, especial
ly if zoned commercial.
Andrews noted Azalea was
designed as a collector road,
not residential, even if it has
homes along it and is now
closed at the railroad.
Voting to reverse the deci
sion were planning commis
sioners Rick Pogue, Steve
Holcomb and Randy Moore,
with members Fred Graham
and Nancy Newell opposed.
County commissioners will
take up the matter again at
their Feb. 1 meeting at 9
