PERRY - V Esther Allen, RN, 74, died Tuesday, Jan. 18,
2005, at a local nursing home. Funeral services will be 2
p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2005 (TODAY), at Watson-Hunt
Chapel, with the Rev. Rick Parker and Horace Woodruff
officiating. Interment will follow at Orange Hill Cemetery
in Hawkinsville. Visitation was from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday
at the funeral home.
Allen, born in Pulaski County, daughter of the late Jere
Richard and Lou (Simmons) Martin, had resided here since
1981. A graduate of Hawkinsville High School and a mem
ber of the National Beta Club, she received her associate
degree in nursing at Clayton College. Before working at
Perry Hospital for seven years, Allen worked at South
Fulton Hospital and Clayton General Hospital. She was a
member of First Baptist Church of Perry and was preceded
in death by sisters, Grace Proctor and Catabelle Rogers.
The family requests donations to First Baptist Church of
Perry or donor’s favorite charity.
Survivors include her husband of 54+ years, Olen Allen;
children, Jere Allen of Jackson and Mark Allen (Charlotte)
of Prairieville, La.; sisters, Wilma Gay of Perry and Nell
Leverette (J.C.) of Centerville; six grandchildren; two great
grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

ed this Earth for Heaven
on Jan. 19, 2005. Funeral
services will be held at 10
a.m. Friday, Jan. 21, 2005 (TODAY), at
Andrew United Methodist Church,
Kathleen, with interment following at
2 p.m. at Andersonville National
Cemetery, Andersonville, with full mil
itary honors. Visitation was from 6
until 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, at
McCullough Funeral Home.
Born in Kansas City, Mo., Nov. 21, 1945, the Rev. Bates
attended Westport High School and the University of
Missouri-Columbia where he obtained a degree in chemistry
in 1967. He is preceded in death by his grandmother, Ruth
Sanford Sills, his mother, Helen May Sills Bates, and his
father, Ronald Allen Bates. After working in the University
of Missouri Medical Center as a research chemist in
Hematology, the Rev. Bates entered the U.S. Air Force and
became a decorated combat aviator, serving in Vietnam
where he flew nearly 200 combat missions in the RF4-C air
craft. Over the next 20 years, Bates flew in multiple fighter
aircraft, became an instructor pilot in the T-38 and A-10 air
craft and received the following medals for heroism and
valor: The Legion of Merit; Distinguished Flying Cross (2);
Combat Air Medal (11); Meritorious Service Medal (4);
USAF Commendation Medal (2); USAF Outstanding Unit
Award with Valor Device; Distinguished Presidential Unit
Citation (2); Combat Readiness Medal; USAF Recognition
Ribbon; USAF Overseas Short and Long Ribbons; USAF
Longevity Service with Oak Leaf Clusters; Republic of
Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Device; Republic of Vietnam
Service Campaign Medal; Small Arms Marksmanship
Traffic stops net
drug suspects

Traffic stops over the past
week have resulted in
numerous arrests of alleged
drug dealers and users.
• Allan Kyle Spangler, 46,
211 Surrey Drive, Warner
Robins, was arrested for
DUI-refusal, failure to
maintain lane and making
an improper turn, after a
deputy reportedly observed
him weaving back and forth
in his lane along Houston
Lake Road near Dunbar
Road. The deputy initiated a
traffic stop but the offender
did not stop until a second
deputy pulled in front of
him, according to reports.
The deputies noted
Spangler was very nervous,
with his hands shaking
uncontrollably and his
pupils very dilated. The
offender refused to submit
to a urine test. A search of
his person found rolled up
cigarette pack in his right
front pocket. Inside the pack
were numerous pink trans
parent plastic baggies, some
reportedly with white
residue inside.

BASE - Several people at
Headquarters Air Force
Reserve Command came up
big winners in competition
for 2004 AFRC mission sup
port awards.
Command officials
announced the top units and
individuals Jan. 12.
The following individuals
won headquarters level
van, deputies reportedly
found a small black bag on
the floor board next to the
driver’s seat. In the bag,
were three glass pipes and a
clear plastic bag containing
several other green trans
parent plastic bags, accord
ing to reports. Also found in
the van was an older model
bolt action rifle.
• Pills and scales were
found in car at a traffic stop
on Jan. 14. The driver, iden
tified as Justin Dorough, 22,
of The Rock, was only cited
for running the stop sign at
Moody and Leisure Lake.
The unmarked white chalky
pill and the scales were con
fiscated. Driver said he got
them from a friend and was
taking them to another
friend, and had no idea what
was in the bottle.

Ribbon; and the Airman’s Medal for Heroism. Before retir
ing as a lieutenant colonel in the USAF, the Rev. Bates com
pleted his first graduate degree in human relations at the
University of Oklahoma.
While still on active duty, Gene received the call into full
time Christian ministry and began his seminary graduate
work at Eden Theological Seminaiy in St. Louis, Mo. In
1988, Bates returned to Warner Robins and completed his
divinity degree from Candler School of Theology, Emory
University, Atlanta, and was an Ordained Elder in full con
nection with the South Georgia Annual Conference of the
United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bates served
Manchester UMC in St. Louis; First UMC in Warner
Robins, and Andrew UMC in Kathleen, which was a revi
talized new church development mission church. Serving
Andrew UMC for nearly 12 years, Bates led the church from
ten members to over 500 and it became one of the fastest
growing Methodist churches in the conference. He was hon
ored by the Annual Conference for his efforts with the
Harry Denman Evangelism Award, and the South Georgia
Golden Hammer Missions Award. Bates had completed the
basic and advanced Billy Graham Schools of Evangelism as
well as the Jerusalem Center for Biblical Studies in
Jerusalem, Israel. Gene and his wife, Kay, lead numerous
overseas missions to Belize, Costa Rica, Central America,
Bolivia, South America, and both served on the Board of
Directors of the Kenya Methodist University Development
Association (KEMUDA), Meru, Kenya, East Africa. Gene
served as CEO of KEMUDA for two years and was the CEO
during the first graduating class of 2000. This new
Methodist University is now a hallmark of higher education
in all of Africa, offering both undergraduate and graduate
degrees and is working on building a new medical school
and teaching hospital in Maua, where Gene led his first
medical mission team in 1991.
During Gene’s two callings/careers, he had the wonderful
experience of traveling and living in a few of the over 60
nations around the world. Kay and Gene were blessed by
leading tours and traveling the Middle East on five occa
sions to Israel, Jordan and Egypt. Together they loved to
travel, to meet all of God’s children and share in his com
mission to “Go Ye Therefore, into all the world... (Matthew
28:19)”.
The Rev. Bates also was very active in his community
serving for many years as head volunteer Chaplain of the
Houston Medicsd Center; President of the Warner Robins
area Ministerial Association; Vice Chairman of the Board of
Directors Kids Journey Inc., a county collaborative for chil
dren and families in need; the Homeless Shelter Board of
Directors; member of the Houston County YMCA Board of
Directors; co-founder of the Soup Kitchen, an outreach hot
meal mission of First UMC, Warner Robins; co-founder of
the Houston County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity, now
having completed 24 homes; founder and past President of
Chapter 152, Mended Hearts, an international support
group for patients and families of heart surgery. Lt. Col.
Bates was a life member of Daedalian, an International
Fraternity of Military Pilots, the Military Order of World
Wars, and the National Eagle Scout Association. He was
also a life member of the Disabled American Veteran’s
Association.
The Rev. Bates is survived by his dedicated and loving
wife of 31 years, Amanda Catherine Perritt (Kay) Bates of

stopped on Ignico Drive at
Ga. 247 for a nonfunction
ing tag light on Jan. 14. The
officer reportedly noticed an
odor of alcoholic beverage
coming from the Chevy
Monte Carlo and asked the
driver to step out.
The driver complied and
agreed to search. A search
found the contents of a cigar
on the floor; one bud of sus
pected marijuana between
the seat and doorjamb, and
a clear plastic baggie con
taining suspected marijuana
in the glove compartment.
A green, leafy substance
was also reportedly found in
driver’s pocket. A Styrofoam
cup full of beer was located
on the floor of the passen
ger’s side. The two occu
pants of the car were taken
to headquarters, where
Fluellen reportedly admit
ted the marijuana was his.
The passenger, Mario Terry,
31, 120 Briarwood Drive,
Warner Robins, was cited
for having an open contain
er of alcohol.

ROBERT C. “BOB” ERBE
PERRY - Robert C. “Bob” Erbe, 77, died at the Medical
Center on Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005. Funeral services will be
held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at Watson-Hunt
Funeral Home, with interment at Perry Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday (TODAY) at the
funeral home.
Erbe, a native of Omaha, Neb., and the son of Carl and
Lillie Henninger Erbe had lived in Perry for 32 years. A
retired brewmaster from Pabst Brewing Company with 35
years in the brewing industry, he attended the University of
Nebraska and the Siebel Brewmaster School in Chicago. He
was a member of Beta Theta Pi and the Master Brewers
Association.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he served in World War 11. Erbe was
a member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Warner Robins.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Erbe; children, Robert
L. “Bob” Erbe (Janet), Connilee Engelman (Neil), Jody
Erbe (Jim), and Joy Erbe (Craig); sister, Barbara McMullen
(Roy); grandchildren, Jodi L. Erbe, Robert M. Erbe, Brent
Engelman, Stacy Engleman, and Cara Engleman.

SCOTT JACKSON JR.
SEATTLE, Wash. - Scott Jackson
Jr., 23, died on Jan. 15, 2005, in
Seattle, Wash. Scott is survived by his
mother, Gayla S. Jackson and Jerry
Granstaff of Perry, and John and
Jennifer Jackson of Warner Robins;
sister, Jillian M. Jackson of Warner
Robins; grandparents, Alice G. Bryant
of Waxhaw, N.C., and Joe and Teddie
Sandifer of Beebe, Ark.; and the late
Cecil and Lillian Jackson of Furman,
Ala.
Visitation will be from 7 until 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at
Heritage Memorial Funeral Home in Warner Robins. A pri
vate eulogy will follow the visitation. A memorial service for
Scott will be held on Jan. 23, 2005 in Seattle, Wash. In lieu
of flowers, donations may be made tot the donor’s favorite
charity.
