What's shutting down my Windows XP firewall?
Dear TechnoFiles:
When I read the first
question last week, it
reminded me of a similar
problem I had with my
computer. The problem
ended up being not frag
mentation, but rather
adware and malware
running secretly in the
background (which I
guess is the same as hav
ing a lot of running pro
grams residing in memo
ry). Norton Internet
Security could not delete
a number of the
adware/spyware pro
grams because they were
running (which is appar
ently a failing of the pro
gram). But Lavasoft’s
freeware Ad-Aware
(www. lavasoft.com)
wiped them all out. Can’t
recommend it enough.
Now here’s a question:
I installed Norton
Internet Security and
have since decided I
would rather use
Windows XP Service
Pack 2’s firewall instead
of the Norton firewall.
I’ve disabled the Norton
Personal Firewall, but
now every time I boot up,
something (probably
Norton) disables the
Windows Firewall.
I want the Windows
Firewall to be up at all

Frustrated with Firewall
in WR
Dear Frustrated:
Thanks for the comments,
and I concur about Ad-
Aware. Honestly, I’m not a
big fan of Norton firewall,
for a number of reasons,
perhaps most importantly it
doesn’t block intrusions all
that effectively and it tends
to slow down your machine
significantly. First thing to
determine with your current
configuration is if you have
a problem. I like the Gibson
Research page at
www.grc.com, and click their
“Shields Up” page to see if
your router or current set
tings are sufficient.
Assuming you have a prob

I remove that? - D in WR
Dear D:
Outlook Express and
Outlook have a security fea
ture that prevents access to
potentially harmful attach
ments. If you are confident
your virus software is updat
ed and want to open attach
ments, look under Tools,
Options, Security, and
uncheck the box that says:
”Do not allow attachments
to be saved or opened that
could potentially be a virus.”
If you still have problems,
you can also reduce your
security settings in the
Control Panel, under
Internet Options, Security,
and choose a lower security
setting.
For some Web sites, you
must choose medium or
even low to be able to use
them, but be aware that low
ering your security could
expose your computer to
both viruses and unautho
rized access.
In Outlook, gaining
attachment access depends
on your version. In Outlook
XR you must download a
separate patch from the
Microsoft Web site to share
many types of files via e
mail. Outlook 2000 and
lower are more lenient -
simply go to Tools, Options,
Security, and hit the button
“Attachment Security.”
Choose none if you don’t
smaller bags of suspected
marijuana. All suspected
drugs field-tested positive,
according to the report.
All four occupants of the
black Toyota Paseo were
taken to headquarters and
the car, registered to a
Marshallville woman who
was not in the car, was
towed.
After questioning, Chester
was charged with possession
with intent for both mari
juana and cocaine. The driv
er, Arthur Curtis McCants,
51, Reynolds, was cited for
failure to maintain a single
lane and released. He
reportedly veered into the
breakdown lane from the
left lane as the patrol car
approached on Russell
Parkway.
A brown cigarette contain
ing a green, leafy substance
was reportedly found in the
shoe of a female passenger
of the car. It was turned into
evidence to be destroyed and
she was not charged.
