Bears succeed thanks to some 'Wiley' seniors

WARNER ROBINS -
Houston County’s
wrestling team
is having its best
season at 28-3 and head
coach Heath Burch credits
his five seniors for leading
the way.
“Their contributions were
vital,” Burch said. “I could
count on four of the five to
win, not only win, but get
a pin.”
Zack Wiley is the leader of
the leaders says his coach.
“He is the undisputed
spiritual leader of this
team,” Burch said. “He
works harder, runs harder
than anybody.”
Wiley has been wrestling
since his fifth-grade year in
lowa. When he moved with
his family to Georgia, he
began in earnest. He now
wrestles in the 152-pound
division.
He has won 38 matches
against four defeats, and
those losses came at the
hands of some of the top
wrestlers in the state, his

region competitive cheer
leading competitions are
scheduled for this weekend.
The Houston County
team will head for Worth
County to compete for first
place in 1-AAAAA.
Hornets split basketball matchups

Wouldn’t you just know
it? Westfield’s boys split
their games on the hard
wood this past weekend
but other than the fact
1-1 is a lot better than 0-
2 - not to mention a win
is always good for your
confidence - they didn’t
make any gains where they
needed them.
That’s because the
Hornets lost 83-61 to GISA

West Point.
Such is his love of the
sport, Wiley quit football his
senior season to focus on
wrestling.
“I want to place in the top
six at state,” he said.
He has defeated all five
of his region opponents to
date.

ers will not have to compete
in sectionals.
That alone is enough
motivation to strive for the
top spot says, head coach
Jennifer Pritchett.
“We’ll do just fine if the
girls hit their routine with
confidence,” she said.

Swimmers
mark 50th
meet win

ALBANY - Houston
County’s Lady Bears swim
team just turned 50!
No, that has nothing
to do with age. Rather,
a win in the Panther
Invitational this past
weekend in Albany
improved the girls’ record
to 50-0.
After posting one loss
in each of the past two
regular seasons, and
with two regular season
meets left - the first is
the county champion
ships Wednesday at 3:30
p.m. at Fort Valley State
University - the girls
are now aiming for per
fection, said head coach
James Parker.
Saturday, Houston
County’s girls - finished
the meet with 203 points.
Second was Lee County
with 88 and third was
Northside, which had 83.
Leading Houston
County with two first
place finishes was fresh
man Catherin Goodman
who won the 200 and 100
Freestyle events.
Goodman, along with
Katie Carpenter, Sarah
Smith and Marley Hudson,
added another victory in
the 400 Freestyle relay.
The girls set a new meet
record in that event, said
Parker. Carpenter also
won the 50 free.
On the boys side,
Houston County also cap
tured first. They had 210
points while Upson-Lee
and White Water finished
