ALABAMA —The 1837 St. James
Hotel in Selma (pop. 20,512) was
restored during a $6 million project in
1997. Benjamin Sterling Turner, the first
African-American to be elected to the
U.S. Congress from Alabama, once man
aged the hotel.
A R K A N S A S —The Gibson family in
Winslow (pop. 399) has woven white
oak baskets the old-fashioned way—
without glue, nails or power tools—
since 1840.
FLORIDA —The state's largest
remaining stand of virgin bald cypress
trees grows in the National Audubon
Society’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
northeast of Naples (pop. 20,976). In
the sanctuary, a 2.25-mile boardwalk
directs visitors through the forest of
600-year-old trees as well as a pine
upland, wet prairie and marsh.

GEORGlA —Alabama Vest of
Macon, who invented the kazoo, made
quite an impression with the musical
instrument at the 1852 state fair.
Macon clockmaker Thaddeus von
Clegg fabricated the kazoo according
to Vest’s specifications.
KENTUCKY —The world’s longest
plastic-deck bridge is the 420-foot-long
pedestrian bridge across the Levisa Fork of
the Big Sandy River near Paintsville (pop.
4,132). Dedicated in 1999 as the Forrest
and Maxie Preston Memorial Suspension
Bridge, it connects the communities of
River and Offutt.
LOUlSlANA —Basketball Hall of
Famer Clyde “The Glide” Drexler, a New
Orleans native, played for the Portland
Trail Blazers and the Houston Rockets
and won a gold medal as part of the U.S.
Olympic Dream Team in Barcelona,
Spain, in 1992.

NORTH CAROLINA— At Bndal
Veil Falls near Highlands, car washes are
no longer available, as suggested in a
recent issue of American Profile. Tons of
rock that cantilevered over a section of old
U.S. Highway 64 fell in December 2003,
blocking the road under the falls.
SOUTH CAROLINA —An ancient
form of construction, pise de terre or
“rammed earth," was used in 1850 to
build the Church of the Holy Cross in
Stateburg (pop. 1,264). In pise de terre ,
clay is poured into wooden molds and
tamped down until solid. The process
is repeated until the desired wall
height is reached.

TENNESSEE —Each May since
1941, with one year off during World
War 11, the Iroquois Steeplechase has been
run in Percy Warner Park in Nashville,
and since 1981, the horse race has benefit
ed Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
VIR GINIA—One of the nation’s top
competitive eaters, Sonya Thomas of
Alexandria, ate 38 lobsters in 12 min
utes to clinch the World Lobster
Eating Contest last August in
Kennebunk, Maine. In other contests,
she has eaten 36 dozen oysters in 10
minutes and 48 soft chicken tacos in
11 minutes.
WEST VIRGINIA— In 1988, the
flood-control damming of the West Fork
River near Weston (pop. 4,317) created
the 2,650-acre Stonewall Jackson Lake,
named for the Confederate general who
spent his boyhood years at nearby
Jackson’s Mill.
