Westfield fifth-graders win essay contest

Westfield fifth-graders just completed the ADVANCE program. ADVANCE has replaced
the D.A.R.E. program, and it teaches young people to resist drugs, alcohol, gangs and
violence. Students completed workbook assignments each week, participated in a
question-and-answer session with high school role models, drew posters, and wrote
an essay. Bill Hathcock, SRO Officer, Community Service Division of the Perry Police
Department, led the training, and was also an important influence on the students who
gained a new respect for him and his very important job. Essay winners are (front row)
John Tucker, Smyth Sexton; (back mw) Mary Catherine Johnson Christine Campbell,
Drew McDaniel and Caleb Weaver.
Perry MS FFA Team competes in Land
Judging Career Development event

Middle FFA Land Judging
Team recently competed in
the State FFA Land Judging
Career Development event.
The event was held at the
State FFA Camp in
Covington.

compete at the state event

in the State FFA Meats
Evaluation and Technology
Career Development Event.
The event was held at the
University of Georgia in
Athens.

vides students the opportu
nity to determine land clas
sification, use and treat
ment practices for selected
sites. The students must
consider topsoil texture and
thickness, effective depth,
permeability of subsoil,
slope, erosion, drainage and
land capability.
FFA is a national organi
zation of over 449,000 mem
products in order to opti
mize economic returns to
producers and industry as
well as to meet the needs of
consumers. The event moti
vates students to become
knowledgeable consumers of
meat and meat animal prod
ucts. Participants take a
written examination, identi
fy retail cuts, and grade car
casses on quality and yield
grade. Team members

Tully Lineberger
