FORT VALLEY - Houston
County swimmer Brigitte
Gausche won first place in
every event she swam: two
relays and two individual
events.
As a member of the 200
yard medley relay, Gausche
and teammates Catherin
Goodman, Katie Carpenter
and Sarah Smith won the
event with a 2:01.29. That
set a new meet record set last
year by Houston County.
The same team won the
400 freestyle relay with
another record breaking
time of 3:47.
The previous record was
4:15.07 set by another
Houston County relay team
last year.
Gausche went on to place
first in the 50 freestyle and
100 freestyle with times of

keep Warner Robins’ Ben
Culpepper from winning the
200-yard freestyle, 100 free.
He set meet records in both.
“He had a great meet,” said
Warner Robins coach Barbara
Hawkins. “Everybody had
good times.”
Culpepper won the 200
with a state qualifying time
of 1:53.49. Winfield Tufts,
1:56.50; Tyler Jackson
1:10.75 and Drew Bratcher,
2:12.19, all of Houston
County also beat the meet
record time of 2:14.53.
On the girls’ side, Brigitte
Gausche won the 50 free
style and the 100 freestyle
and met state qualifying
times doing it. Her 50 time
was 25.77 and her 100 was
55.50.
The Houston County soph
omore was followed by fresh
man Catherine Goodman
who also qualified for state
with second place finishes in
both events with times of
25.98 and 57.62, respectively.
Warner Robins’ Abigail
Cunningham won the 200
freestyle and Katie Carpenter
finished second. Both swim
mers had state qualify
ing times under 2:08.50.
Cunningham finished with
a 2:04.33 and Carpenter had
a 2:08.04.
According to Hawkins,
Cunningham’s time in the
200 was also a personal best.
Carpenter and Perry’s
Meg Williams met in the
most exciting race of the
meet. The two had already
qualified for state in the 100
breaststroke.
Carpenter’s previous time
was 1:14.68 and Williams
had a 1:14.75 in her last
meet.
Williams held on to touch
the wall first at 1:15.25.
Carpenter was less than four
tenths behind at 1:15.61.
“I thought I was swim
ming a 1:12,” Williams said.
“My muscles were cramping
but I just kept going.”
Lindsey Duprey won two
events for Northside. She
broke her old record of
1:04.07 set last year with a
1:02.36. She also won the 500
freestyle by almost a minute
with a 5:44.22. The second
place time was 6:35.39.
This was the last event
of the season. The swim
mers who qualified will go
to the state preliminaries
scheduled for Feb. 11 at
Westminster High School in
Atlanta.
