high 18 points. Her eight in
the fourth quarter account
ed for all of Perry’s fourth
quarter points and ensured
a Lady Panthers victory.
The Lady Trojans went
on a 12-0 run late to pull
to within four, 43-39, but
King responded by outscor
ing Peach County 6-4 in the
final three minutes to pre
serve the victory.
“I think that one thing
was we weren’t mentally
ready,” said Peach County
head coach Maxine Cherry.

LAS VEGAS - Only three
weeks remain until the
beginning of the 2005 sea
son, and drivers in both the
NASCAR NEXTEL Cup
Series and Busch Series are
taking advantage of dwin
dling seat time.
The final four days of
NASCAR Preseason Thunder
opened Monday with the
NEXTEL Cup Series testing
at Las Vegas and the Busch
Series testing at California
Speedway.
A total of 44 teams went to
work, and according to Mark
Martin, these last test days
should provide important
pieces of teams’ preparatory
puzzles.
“It’s still January,” Martin
said. “Some gains are made
at the race track and some
are made at the shop. And
so you can’t expect to make
all the gains here that you
want to make. You have to
go home sometimes to make
the portion of the gains. So
that’s what we’ll do.”
For Jeff Gordon the first
hours of testing were a
chance to stretch legs and
get back in the routine of
putting down laps. Although
the month’s earliers test ses
sions at Daytona are cru
cial for the season-opening
Daytona 500, this week’s

entered the contest unde
feated in region play.
The Panthers looked to be
filling the David part well
- that is until Peach County
opened the third quarter
with an 8-0 run.
Instead it was a Greek
tragedy and this time, the
Trojans won.
“I said as team for us to
be successful, we had to play
determined defense,” said
Peach County head coach
Rickey Wray. “We practiced
hard to get them in a half
court game we play.”
Tarvis Billings hit a three
pointer two and a half min
utes into the third to stop
the hemorrhaging, but by
then the Trojans had pulled
to within seven, 42-35.
Still up by six, 48-42 going
into the fourth quarter,
things came unhinged for
Perry. The Panthers made
only two field goals in 12
shots.
West scored all six of his
points during the final eight
minutes on four free throws
and a field goal.
“We have to find a way
to get him the ball,” Hardy
said.
Cox scored 10 points in the
fourth. His putback at 4:35
gave Peach County its first
lead of the game, 52-51.
The lead changed hands
24 at the half.
It was the Lady Panthers’
third-quarter surge that
gave them the margin need
ed to survive their fourth
quarter doldrums.
The Lady Panthers held
the Lady Trojans to only one
field goal and three points
during that time while they
scored 13 to take a 41-27
lead going into the fourth.
Then Peach County start
ed pressing.
Subsequently, after King’s
layup opened the fourth to
give Perry its largest lead of
the game, 43-27, the Lady
Panthers committed eight
turnovers, four on consecu
tive possessions, while try
ing to solve Peach County’s
press. That resulted in the
Lady Trojans’ comeback.
“We work on our press
offense,” said Perry head
coach John Chance. “We
didn’t have floor balance.
We had too many going to
one spot.”
“At one point they had
that (Southwest, which ral
lied in much the same way)
tests at Las Vegas and
California are geared for
season-long data.
“Really, for the driver,
anyway, this is really get
ting back to it,” said Gordon.
“You really have to drive
your car here and get a good
feel for any changes that
have happened in the off
season or just kind of get
back in a rhythm.”
Both Martin and Gordon
said a primary focus of the
week’s West Coast tests is on
a new spoiler height. An inch
has been shaved from the
spoiler; it’s now 4.5 inches
high compared to 5.5 inches
last season, and combined
with new tire compounds
from Goodyear, the spoiler
change is expected to affect
on-track handling.
“I certainly hope that it
makes the cars more of a
challenge to drive,” Martin
said.
So does Jimmie Johnson.
His roots are in off-road rac
ing, and he thinks racing on
dirt may help him adjust to
new handling issues.
“There’s a lot of movement
in the cars,” said Johnson.
“But I think with my back
ground and my driving style,
that’s something that’s going
to help me, I think. Not help
me, but it’s not going to hurt
me as much as it may some
other guys.”
seven times until Detrich
Hudson started a four
point run by hitting both
free throws for his only two
points of the game.
Cox followed immediately
capping his 29-point night
with another putback. He
had 10 points off of offensive
rebounds plus six points set
up by defensive rebounds.
Leading 60-57, Peach
County held off Perry come
back attempts in the final
three minutes to clinch the
victory.
With the win, the Trojans
are guaranteed first place
and a trip to the state play
offs. Perry, with two regions
losses to Peach County,
earned the second seed.
They host Mary Persons
Thursday night for their
final region game and then
Dodge County Friday night.
Region tournament play
begins next week.

King scored four points on
back-to-back fastbreaks, one
inspired by her defensive
rebound that she took coast
to coast for two, followed by
her steal at midcourt that
she turned into another fast
break layup.
Perry was up by eight, 47-
39, at that point.
With under a minute left
in the game, King hit both
ends of a one and one to cap
the team's scoring at 49.
Peach County managed
only two points in the final
