Sunday, Feb. 6
• The American Legion
Auxiliary Unit 172 will present
a program at 3 p.m. honoring
the Four Chaplains who lost
their lives when a German U-
Boat torpedoed and sunk the
USAT Dorchester on Feb. 2,
1942. The Four Chaplains of
different faiths passed out life
jackets to the soldiers and gave
them encouragement as they
got into the life rafts. Of the
920 men onboard, 230 survived
in the icy waters, had it not
been for the chaplains, the
number who perished would
have been much greater. As a
final gesture the chaplains gave
their own life vests and stood
arm in arm as the ship sank.
