Houston County
1. is the next new school
slated to be opened in Houston
County?
2. Where does Sandefur Road
begin, and where does it end ?
3. In what branch of the armed
services did former U.S. Sen.
Sam Nunn serve?
4. What is the Warner Robins
Character Word for this month ?
Houston Experts
From last week: Centerville
was founded in 1958. All four of
the towns mentioned were in
Houston County a century ago.
EDIMGIAFAD originally stood
for “Every Day in Middle Georgia
is Air Force Appreciation Day,”
but now stands for “Every Day in
Middle Georgia is Armed Forces
Appreciation Day,” so we’re
counting either answer as right.
The little boy named George
Ervin grew up being called
Sonny and is now the governor of
Georgia. Getting all four right
were Le Ann Tuggle and Jim
Worrall.
Last week's questions
Charlotte’s Literary Quiz
Let’s move to southern fiction.
In a wonderfully funny tale by a
great Mississippi writer, a char
acter named Edna Earle is the
narrator. Other characters
include Edna Earle’s brother
Daniel and Daniels’ young
wife, Bonnie Dee. Give the name
of the story and the writer.
Last Week's Cognoscenti
Last week’s quotation, which
began, “Oh Tiber, Father Tiber.”
was from “Horatius at the
Bridge” by Thomas B. Macauley,
with Horatius himself as the
speaker, but also originating with
a work in Latin by Livy. Getting
it right were Ruth Faircloth, Hal
Clay. Peggy Colbert, Beckie
Burnham (Welcome back,
Beckie!), Laurie Jones, Bill
Harrison, Jim Worrall, Betsy
Bazemore, Jolene Pierson and
Mike Stanley.
Bible Quiz
This week’s questions are
about parentage:
Who was the father of Nimrod
the mighty hunter?
Who was the father of
Ashkenaz, and Riphath and
Togarmah ?
Who were the parents of
Gershom ?
Who was the mother of King
David?
The Scripturally Savvy
Last week’s statements were
made by Solomon (“I am but a
little child.”; Ruth (“Intreat me
not to leave thee.); Abraham
(“Shall a child be born.”), Cain
(“Am I my brother’s keeper?”)
and , from the New Testament,
Peter, who told Ananias he was
lying. Getting the answers right
were Shirley Rowan, Beckie
Burham, Laurie Jones, Jolene
Pierson,Jim Worrall and Bill
Harrison.
Bishop's Baffler
Joe Bishop continues to baffle.
Here’s his question for this week:
What Georgia governor was
saved from certain death by a
clothes basket?
The Historically Baffled
Only one person even tried and
that one got it wrong. Here’s
Joe’s answer: The earliest known
ghost sighting in Georgia
occurred in the 1740 s at what is
now the Ocmulgee National
Monument in Macon. Seems a
group of travelers were visiting
the English trading post estab
lished to encourage good rela
tions with the neighboring Creek
Indians. During the night of
their stay, one visitor recorded in
his diary of hearing a woman’s
scream and the chanting of
numerous natives, but the terri
fied group could find no one
nearby. When questioned the
next morning, the locals said
they knew well who - or what
-made the noises - the spirits of
those who lived in the area
before them and built the huge
earthen mounds which still dom
inate the landscape to this day.
Eskimo suits and birthday suits
This week on the UGA
campus, elections for
Student Government
Association (SGA) are tak
ing place. I’ve never been
one to get heavily involved
in politics, but since the
SGA controls our student
funds, I thought I should
do a little bit of research.
I paid attention some
what to the presidential
election last year, and
developed a small under
standing of what types of
platforms people run on,
such as the “Vote
Freedom” platform, or the
“Vote Democracy” plat
form, or the “Vote for Tall,
Middle-aged Men” plat
form, or even the (prepare
for cheesy joke) “Wooden”
platform.

other major party is the
Vote Naked party.
My roommate and I first
came into contact with this
party in the dorms, when a
horde of them gathered in
the lobby with bright yel
low shirts on proclaiming
“Vote Naked.”
As you can probably
imagine, this party name is
catching a lot of people’s
attention and generating
the reaction, “Are you kid
ding me?”
And don’t think that this
party is just a few people
who lost a dare going
around promoting voting
in birthday suits; this is a
party that stands a very
good chance to win the
election and take control of
all the inner workings of

I have been thinking
over this campaign strate
gy for some time, and have
been discussing it with my

just can’t seem to under

this campaign is.
It just seems to me like
the dead of February would
not be the best time to
come up with this strategy.
“Vote with Eskimo Suits”
seems more reasonable. To
their credit, they have gen

interest. I think some peo

on tailgating at the polls.
Another problem with
their campaign is that
nobody really knows what
ideas they have about how

I think the thing that
surprises me the most
about this campaign is that
nobody has really ques

their head and says, “Oh
yeah, Vote Naked, they’ve

might talk about a college

I’m not sure why people
