A Democrat from Midway,
Rep. A 1 Williams, said the
need to attract new jobs
shouldn’t trump the public’s
right to know what is being
done with tax money.
“They have a right to
know, and a right to ques
tion what’s being done,”
Williams said, although he
later voted for the bill.
After more than an hour
of debate, the bill passed
109-58. The measure now

Polito also praised Gov.
Sonny Perdue’s efforts.
State Sen. Cecil Staton read
Perdue’s statement to
Goodwill.
“I love the motto,” Staton
said, “to build lives, families
and communities - one job
at a time.”
Brad Adams, one of those
helped by Goodwill, gave a
testimonial saying the
expanded services at the
training center are “helping
people help themselves. I
really don’t know where I’d
be without Goodwill. I
wouldn’t be here today.”
The grants, combined
with previous donations go
toward completing phase II
of the local Goodwill’s $4.8
million capital campaign.
Friday’s donations bring the
campaign total to just over
$3 million.
Jim Stiff, president and
CEO of Goodwill Industries
of Middle Georgia, said an
anonymous foundation
would donate $250,000 if
Goodwill can raise the
remaining $1.5 million of
the capital campaign by
July.
Phase I of the campaign
included the Job
Connection, the Goodwill
Emporiums and Good Books
Case, a distribution training
center and an industrial
contracts training area.
Many of these are held at
the Career & Conference
Center in the former Sam’s
Club site across from Macon
State College on Eisenhower
Parkway.
Phase II includes the Polly
Long Denton Culinary Arts
& Hospitality School and

At times the House debate
was heated, with Stephens
defending his bill from alle
gations that it allows cloak
and-dagger negotiations.
The final vote didn’t
break neatly along party
lines. At least one
Republican called the whole
matter unnecessary.
“We can compete with any
other state in the union,”
said Rep. Mark Hatfield.
