The keynote speaker was

The theme will be “Preparing the Bride

Dr. Glenda Wallace, Ministry of Hope,

When the exam was over,
the doctor turned to the
mother and criticized her for
intruding. He said in front
of the girl: “You know, you
really had no business being
in the examining room. It is
time I related directly to
your daughter. You should
not even be aware of the
care that I give her or the
medication I prescribe. Nor
should you know the things
that are said between us. My
care of your daughter should
now be a private matter
between her and me.”
The girl had been going
through a period of rebel

authority was weakened by
the doctor’s comments. It
was as though he were say

now passed. She should now
make her own decisions.”
Fortunately, that mother
was unwilling to do as she
was told and promptly found
a new doctor. Good for her!

of education, the mother has
realized this method is
applicable within the family
unit.
While we do not hear of
Jesus speaking the words, “I
love you,” it was He who
first demonstrated “Show
and Tell.” One of many
examples is recorded in
Matthew 9: 1-3. After show
ing compassion for the
afflicted man through heal
ing, Jesus voiced His love by
saying, “Son, be of good
cheer; thy sins be forgiven
thee.”
Family members who
speak those three little
words freely, know the value
of spoken love. I am grate
ful that “I Love You”, com
bined with “Show and Tell”
is a part of the vocabulary
within my family.

versation with several pedi

agreed with the doctor in
this case. They emphasized
the importance of a young

with in private. Perhaps.
But I object to the autonomy
demanded by the physician.
Fourteen-year-old boys and
girls are not grown, and
their parents are still the
best people to care for them
and oversee their develop
ment. It is appropriate for a
physician to have some pri
vate moments with a young
patient, but he should never
forget to whom accountabil
ity is owed.
Furthermore, if greater
authority is to be granted to
the doctor, the parent had
better find out just what he
or she believes about contra
ceptives for minors, premar
ital sex, spiritual matters
and the like. Be careful

QUESTION: Since
almost every couple
fights from time to time,
what distinguishes a
healthy marriage from
one that is in serious
trouble? How can a hus
band and wife know
when their conflicts are
within normal limits and
when they are symptoms
of more serious prob

DR. DOBSON: It is true
that conflict occurs in virtu
ally all marriages. That is
how resentment and frus

families and those in serious

trouble is evidenced by what
happens after a fight.
In healthy relationships, a
period of confrontation ends
in forgiveness in drawing
together, in deeper respect
and understanding, and
sometimes in sexual satis
faction. But in unstable
marriages a period of con
flict produces greater pain
and anger that persist until
the next fight. When that
occurs, one unresolved issue
is compounded by another
and another. That accumu
lation of resentment is an
ominous circumstance in
any marriage.
