a very sad day for the citi

the public safety officers
who responded. It is obvious
this was not taken into con
sideration.”
Perry Police Capt. William
Phelps said the two were the
only ones charged, but
“there were enough people
that knew about it before
hand and right after, that
the whole thing could have
been prevented.”
Phelps said the names of
the others who knew of the
hoax were turned over to
school officials. The captain
said the two were also found
with drugs and a knife, but
was unsure of what other
punishment they may face.
“They violated school pro
cedures,” he said. “I can’t
speak for what the school
will do.”
Williams said she was
“pretty certain” the two will
not be allowed to attend a
school in the county, but
noted it’s up to the school
system to decide.
“They will be punished,”

said Houston County School
Superintendent Danny
Carpenter. “We will deal
with them appropriately.”
Carpenter wanted to
emphasize that this was not
a harmless prank.
“As superintendent, I am
certainly concerned about
the disrupting school but
also about the unnecessary
use of county emergency
personnel,” he said. “What
if we had a real life-and
death situation?”
Carpenter said the two
will face a tribunal within a
couple of days.
Saturday, Phelps said he
thought the two would have
to take part in a 90-day boot
camp or be sent to the
regional youth detention
center.
“They don’t have prior
criminal records,” Phelps
said Saturday.
Williams said she recom
mended on Monday that the
two be sent to the 90-day
boot camp, “but the decision
was made by the judge, in
the best interest of the chil
dren, to try and rehabilitate
them.”

Police and school officials
