Chaney out at Temple
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - John
Chaney will not coach Temple in
the Atlantic 10 tournament, part
of a self-imposed punishment for
ordering rough play by one of
his players in a recent game that
resulted in an opponent's injury.
Chaney was already suspend
ed by the school for the final three
games of the regular season. He
sent in a player he described as a
"goon” against Saint Joseph's last
week, and Hawks' senior John
Bryant wound up with a broken
arm.
This was the third time in less
than a week that disciplinary
action was taken on Chaney.
Chaney originally suspended
himself for one game before the
extent of Bryant's injury was
known.
Bears release Terrel
LAKE FOREST, 111. (AP) - Wide
receiver David Terrell, the eighth
overall pick in the 2001 draft, was
released by the Chicago Bears
after four seasons of failed expec
tations.
The move came two days
after the Bears signed All-Pro
receiver Muhsin Muhammad,
who was released by the Carolina
Panthers.
Muhammad was cut because
the Panthers did not want to pay
a $lO million roster bonus due
on Tuesday. The Bears will give
him a sl2 million signing bonus,
which is guaranteed money.
Terrell, who had another year
left on his contract, started 15
games last season and led the
Bears with a career-high 699
yards receiving on 42 receptions
with one touchdown.
Over four years with the team,
he totaled 128 receptions, 1,602
yards receiving and nine touch
downs.
Anaheim appeals ning
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -The city
of Anaheim appealed a judge's
ruling that would allow the Angels
to continue using the team’s new
name, the Los Angeles Angels of
.-..Anaheim - „ ....
-! Superior Cauft Judge Peter
Polos refused fadt month to grant
the city a preliminary injunction
to block the team from using Los
Angeles in its name.
He also denied a request for a
temporary restraining order after
the city sued the Angels, claiming
the name switch would violate the
, team’s lease of the stadium.
The judge, however, said
that the contract requires only
that Anaheim be included in the
name.
The team was formerly the
Anaheim Angels.
Ha beats hurting WHams
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates
(AP) - Venus Williams struggled
with a blister on her right palm
and lost in the first round for the
first time in four years, beaten by
Italy's Silvia Farina Elia 7-5, 7-6
(6) in the Dubai Women’s Open.
Williams’ previous first-round
ouster was to Barbara Schett at
the 2001 French Open. She also
lost her opening match at Moscow
in October 2002 to Magdalena
Maleeva but after a first-round
bye.
Former Wimbledon champion
Conchita Martinez and rising
Indian star Sania Mirza - the old
est and youngest players in the
draw - also reached the second
round.
Irwin wins Outback venue
LUTZ, Fla. (AP) - Hale Irwin
finished a second-round 68 to slip
past Morris Hatalsky and win the
rain-delayed Outback Steakhouse
Pro-Am by one shot.
Taking advantage of improved
weather, which made the TPC of
Tampa Bay course less demand
ing than the previous three days,
Irwin played his remaining 12
holes in 2 under to end with a 36-
hole total of 8-under 134.
Hatalsky was one of only 22
golfers to complete the sec
ond round Saturday, when the
scheduled 54-hole Champions
Tour event was reduced to 36.
Heavy rain Sunday washed out
play after 68 minutes, pushing the
conclusion back.
Hatalsky’s 7-under 135 was
the score to beat. And Inwin, play :
ing the back nine first, pulled
even with a birdie on No. 18.
A birdie on No. 3 gave the win
ner of last month's Turtle Bay
Championship the lead, and Irwin
finished his 42nd tour win with six
straight pars.
Defending champion Mark
McNulty (68) birdied two of his
last four holes to pull even with
Hatalsky.

severe ear infection during the
state tournament.
“He was defeating the fifth
place finisher by a score of 13-
3 when he became dizzy and
nauseated and lost the match
by pin. He won his first match in
the consolation bracket, but lost
his quarterfinal match in double
overtime. Talmage was a great

Noteworthy: Had 15 pins,
two major and five minor deci

“Brandon’s 36 takedowns
were only five less than our
team leader," said head coach
Randy Mizell.
Coach’s corner: “Brandon
was one of the most improved
wrestlers on our team this
year. Having missed the first
two weeks of practice in which
the basic fundamentals were
taught, I think this young man
learned a lot in a short period

“Brandon’s ‘attack’ style of

Record: 9-30
Impact: A state qualifier who

“At the area tournament, he
was in a situation where a sec

out of contention to be a state
qualifier. Eric won his match in
the consolation semis, which
automatically qualified him for
the state tournament.”
Coach’s corner: “For a fresh

Impact: Placed second in the

improved wrestlers," said head
coach Clint Humphrey. “His
best match came at the region

defeated three-time state
champion, Aaron Shivers from
Southland Academy in OT to
advance to the regional finals.
Shivers previously had not lost
a match during his high school
career!”
Coach’s corner: “We were
very proud of Jeremy’s accom

very excited about the fact that
Jeremy is only a sophomore.

“If he had been able to wres

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -
Tony Pena Jr. used to tell
his father to quit swinging
at so many bad pitches.
Now, he’s hearing the
same thing
from his old
man.
Pena, a
23-year-old
shortstop,
is contend
ing for a
job with the
Atlanta Braves this spring.
The team needs someone
to back up Rafael Furcal,
and Pena is one of the con
tenders along with Wilson
Betemit, Luis Hernandez
and Peter Orr.
There’s no question
about Pena’s defense, but
he’s never been much
of a hitter in the minor
leagues. Last season, he
batted .255 with 11 homers
and 34 RBIs at Double-A
Greenville.
“I always have to work
on my hitting,” Pena said.
“I need to be more con
sistent. Last year, I was a
lot more consistent, but I
kind of tailed off the last
month.”
He’s also got to work
on being more selective at
the plate, which isn’t all
that surprising. His father,
a longtime major league
catcher who now managed
the Kansas City Royals,
was one of the most free
swinging players in the
game.
MINER’S CHANCE: Zach Miner
will throw the first pitch
of spring for the Atlanta
Braves, a symbolic gesture
that shows he could be
a big part of the team’s
future.
Miner will start today’s
exhibition game against
Georgia Tech, a game
that manager Bpbby Cox
always uses to get a look at
the team’s most promising
young pitchers.
