Unhappy camping in a Cadillac hearse
I’ve told you about not
being able to rent a chain
saw to cut wood while Myrel
was in the hospital in Texas.
Now to the fun I had when
he finally got to come home
after the first of the year.
My car was a 1968
Cadillac hearse that we trav
eled all over in United
States in and was rigged out
for camping comfortably
with a wall-to-wall bed.
Myrel called and said the
plane would land at Robins
about 3 p.m. on Thursday
afternoon.
Since that was my day to
volunteer at the base hospi
tal, I worked and asked the
section that handled the
incoming patients to call our
How does your skin work?
Have you ever thought of
the fact that your skin is like
a mirror to your emotions,
personality as well as your
general health? Your skin
will and can show an imme
diate reflection of your eat
ing habits, stress level as
well as the environment in
which you live. I have not
spent a long time thinking
about this, but I have
recently begun to study and
research the skin and the
muscles of the body. Okay, I
admit! I am assisting one of
our boys with their science
homework dealing with
bones and muscles!
Anyway, I am now learn
ing so much about our skin
that I thought you may be
interested in learning a few
very interesting facts.
1. Your skin is the largest
organ in the body. It weighs
between 7 and 9 pounds. It
is the most flexible muscle
as well as versatile. It can
perform so many different
functions.
2. Your skin is is like your
own personal waterproof
barrier. It comes between
you and the outside environ
ment. This essentially
means that it is subject to
hot, cold, rain, and other
environmental factors.
3. Your facial skin is the
most tender as well as the
most vulnerable. It
is a definite reflection as
to how well you are taking
care of yourself.

Your skin never lies. So
remember this if you smoke,
drink excessive amounts of
alcohol or expose your skin
unprotected in the sun.
4. If you were to look at a
cross section of your skin,
you would see different lay
ers which have different
functions. The Epidermis is
that part of the skin that
gets the most abuse. Skin
cells are formed on the bot
tom of the epidermis and
take three weeks to move to
the surface. In fact, I
learned that we lose skin
cells all the time. Almost 30
percent of household dust is
simply dead skin cells!
5. The dermis is the layer
of skin that is like your own
natural box springs. This is
the layer of skin that has the
collagen and elastin!

noon which did not bode
well for the plane getting in.
Finally, someone came in to
tell me the plane had gotten
here and they could have
landed but with the weather
so bad, they wouldn’t have
been able to take off again.
They had too many patients
aboard for our base hospital
so they diverted to Fort
Benning in Columbus. What
a let down!
Quitting time came and I
drove home very carefully
because the sleet was still
falling and not only piling
up, but freezing. About 7
p.m. Myrel called and said,
“I’m at Fort Benning, come
get me.” By this time there
was eight inches of frozen
unprotected or smoke and
drink excessively, this is
where your fine lines and
wrinkle begin! You can eas
ily strip your skin of the nat
ural oils which in turn cause
irritation and chapping!
6. The third layer of the
skin is the fatty layer that
stores our fat cells and con
nective tissue. It is like your
own shock absorber because
it supports that skin as well
as cushions our inner
organs. Women have more
fat tissue than men. This in
turn gives our skin a
resiliency that men do not
have!
The' most impressive fact
to me is that our skin can
take a lot of abuse and still
perform what it is intended
to do. However, when your
skin comes in contact with
the outside world, damage
brought on by pollution,
self-inflicted abuse and
nature, you can age prema
turely! One specific exam
ple is a 30-year-old who
spent the majority of their
time in the sun unprotected
can look to be 45 years old.
I hope that this lesson on
the skin will assist you in
understanding why skin
care is so important to each
of us! Next week, we will
look at the different types of
skin. Let’s see which type
you have!
