How do I synchronize My Documents?
Dear TechnoFiles:
I do a lot of work on my
laptop, and I always save
my files in the My
Documents folder on my
laptop. I want to find a
way to make the two My
Documents folders, one
on my laptop and anoth
er on my desktop, always
have the same files on
them. Is there an easy
way to do this? Thanks,
Randy
Dear Randy:
What you are looking for
is folder synchronization,
and there are several pro
grams, some free and some
commercial, and one built-in
to windows, that do this.
Folder synchronization
means the computer com
pares the contents of one
folder against another and
chooses the newest versions
of all the files in both fold
ers. It then will copy them to
the appropriate folder,
insuring you have the latest
files at your fingertips.
Windows XP has the brief
case feature, which is fast
and easy way to update your
files. To use, simply high
light the folder you want to
synchronize (like My
Documents), choose new
from the pull-down menu,
choose briefcase, and then
drag the contents to the
briefcase. Do the same for
other folder on the other
computer (make sure they
are shared of course) and
then choose Update All to
make sure you have the lat
est versions of all your files.

I’ve had my computer

Help? - Tim in Warner
Robins
Dear Tim:
A computer really doesn’t
have a lot of constantly mov
ing parts, and movement is
what’s required anytime
sound is being generated.
That bit of deductive rea
soning leaves the culprit for
your mini-buzz saw to two
components: one of your
cooling fans, or your hard
drive.
Years ago, computers gen
erally only had one cooling
fan next to the power supply.
Today’s computers often
have three: one for the
power supply, one for the
primary graphics processor,
and finally one for the
Central Processing Unit (or
brains of the computer).
Heat dissipation is critical
for a computer’s survival,
and if any of these fans start
to die, eventually so will the
computer. More than likely,
the buzzing is a $lO fan
starting to die that can be
replaced by you, or a service

your computer is too much
like major surgery for your
tastes. One word of caution:
If the sound suddenly stops,
quit using your computer.
Once the bearings in the fan
start to go, they never cor
rect themselves. If the noise
stops, this means that the
fan has probably stopped
turning and you run the risk
of overheating your system.
Not good!
The other possibility is not
quite as cheap or easy. The
buzzing could be the begin
nings of a bad hard drive. If
you can isolate the sound,
perhaps you will be able to
rule out the hard drive, but
if not, backing up your data
as soon as possible and
installing another hard
drive (along with all your
software) might be your
Saturday project. Good luck!
