THE HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL
Selecting china
Almost everyone that sets
up a home goes through a
rite of passage of picking out
china.
While 60 percent of china
sales are attributed to bridal
registry, more and more
individuals are not waiting
for Mr. or Mrs. Right before
picking out dishes.
This task can quickly
become overwhelming if you
are not prepared. Even just
one designer may have
upwards of 100 different
patterns to select from.
Before approaching a
store you might want to con
sider the following:
What is your personal
style of decor?
How often will you enter
tain and for how many?
What is your budget?
These simple questions,
when answered, will quickly
narrow down your choices to
a feasible few.
After this, you may want
decide which type of china
would work best for you.
There are four general
categories and for many
households it is common to
have a set of everyday dishes
as well as a set of special
occasion china.
Bone china is made of

porcelain to which bone ash
has been added. This addi
tion gives bone china its
translucent quality and
whiteness. It is fired at high
temperatures and results in
china that is thin and light
weight, yet durable.
Porcelain china is made
of china clay also known as
kaolin or may be mad of
china stone, known also as
pentuntse. Both types are
fired at very high tempera
tures and are non porous. It
results in a china that is fine
grained yet very strong.
Earthenware is made of
clay that is fired at a low
temperature. The end result
is quite heavy, but very frag
ile.
This is why antique earth
enware is highly collectible.

ca and slipware are all dif
ferent varieties of earthen
ware.
Stoneware is a sturdy
and durable china that is
made from fortified clay that
is fired at extremely high
temperatures.
It is opaque and non
porous. It is generally dish
washer and oven safe which
makes it an excellent selec
tion for everyday dishes.
In regards to trends, flo
rals are making a comeback.
Of course many would say
florals never went out of
style. The “Old Country
Roses” pattern by Royal
Doulton is the number one
china pattern in the world
and it was introduced in
1962.
Bright colors such as
maroon and red, in simple
patterns are also very popu
lar.
Tradition still reigns
supreme. A bride will often
choose a timeless pattern
that compliments the pat
tern their mother or grand
mother chose. This is a good
idea if you stand to inherit
any china from friends or
family members.
A personal favorite is
white dinnerware. Why
white?
First and foremost you
can easily mix and match
between styles.
