Hudgens said that the pro
cedure when they find a
grave of a Confederate vet
eran is to contact the U.S.
Department of Veteran
Affairs, which will provide a
free gravestone for the vet
eran.
“I would bet that there is
at least one Confederate vet
eran buried in every ceme
tery around here,” Hudgens
said.
He believes there are two

children to be moved out of
a stable learning environ
ment.
Maria Little, a mother of
four children who would be
affected, said this would
“wreak emotional havoc” on
her children.
Little moved to Warner
Robins from Maryland, and
said she doesn’t see how it’s
beneficial for the children to
be isolated and transferred.
“They’ve finally stopped
asking, ‘When are we going
back to Maryland?’ and
they’re being moved again,”
Little said.
Gentry said the goals of
the board are to keep neigh
borhood kids together.
“Growth is continuing to
happen, and rezoning is
going to be an issue for the
next few years in this school
system,” he said.
Som p i t
Amonchomchupong, a
mother of two children
affected by the proposal,
said, “If kids aren’t happy,
they don’t get good grades.
It’s not as easy for children
to adapt as it is for adults.
You want to see your kids

back off,” he said. “I feel
that this is not only the
right thing to do it is the
right time to do it. The
mayor’s office is well worth
this salary. At $75,000 he
would still be underpaid in
some cities the same size as
ours.”
Stone likened the decision
to back off on the pay raise
to the council’s decision to
look into installing video
cameras at intersections to
catch red light runners. He
called that action a “back
door tax increase.”
Councilman Steve Smith
also spoke in favor of the
pay raise.
“In the future, we need a
full-time mayor and to get
that we need to pay them a
full-time salary,” Smith said.
“I believe in this raise and I
will support it.”
Speaking to Mayor
Walker, Smith said: “I do
not expect you to have any
opposition in the upcoming
election, so I believe that
this will not become a politi
cal issue.
“There would be two
proper reasons to raise the
mayor’s salary: One would
be if the mayor you have is
doing a good job, and the
SURVEY
From page 1A
“Whether you are giving a
police report, a witness to a
crime, or getting a ticket, we
want the experience to be as
positive as possible,” Evans
said.
The survey asks respon
dents to rate the quality of
life in Warner Robins,
whether it is a good place to
raise children, or to retire
to. It asks whether people
feel safe from crime here
and asks them to rate
whether problems such as
drugs, taxes, and traffic are
important here.
Respondents are asked to
rate the quality of city serv
in the abandoned cemetery
on the site of the new Wal-
Mart Supercenter on Booth
Road.
“If there is at least one
Confederate veteran in a
cemetery, we like to clean it
up so people can pay their
respects,” Hudgens said.
Hudgens said that his
organization is not consid
ered to be “politically cor
rect” in today’s environ
ment despite the good work
it does.
“We are not out to re-fight
the Civil War,” he said.
“That was a tragedy for
everyone involved. We just
want to remember and
honor the people and the
sacrifices they made.”
happy to go to school each
day.”
Parent Sallyanne Pyle
said that growing areas such
as Houston County should
learn from the experiences
of other growing cities.
“Ten years ago, when
Houston, Texas, was one of
the fasting-growing cities in
the nation, children and
teenagers suffered from
repression and aggressive
behavior and even suicide,”
Pyle said. “If we don’t allow
our kids to have roots, they
will never adjust.
“If members of the board
have children they will
understand. I know they
have a tough job, but they
need to hear about this.”
Pyle is a psychiatrist and
said she has worked with
people who have lost their
children, and said it’s horri
ble.
“The rates of suicide in
that area of Texas have
dropped in the last ten
years, because they have
learned from their mis
takes,” Pyle said.
Superintendent Danny
Carpenter said if the vote
other would
be if they
are not
doing a good
job and you
need to
raise the
salary in
order to get
a better
mayor,” said
Smith.
SMITH
Cowart responded to the
opposition to his motion.
“Under the circumstances
I feel that bringing up this
raise in an election year is
not the right thing to do,”
he said. “I got overzealous
with this and have decided it
is better to wait.
“If it is the right thing to
do now it will be the right
thing to do after the elec
tion,” said Cowart.
As before, Mayor Walker
stated that he had no inter
est in getting a pay raise.
“I knew what the job paid
when I took it and it is
enough for me,” he said.
Cowart, Grady Clemonts,
and Terry Horton voted
against the raise while
Smith, Stone, and Thomas
Simms voted for it. Mayor
Walker cast the tiebreaking
vote to rescind the pay raise.
ices such as fire, police,
parks, ease of travel and
many others. Citizens are
then asked whether they
have ever had any contact
with the Police Department
and to rate the quality of
that contact. Department
employees are asked to rate
their experience as employ
ees.
“We want employees to
know that they can feel free
to express their feelings,”
said Evans. “I am not naive
enough to think that every
one will feel free to come to
me, but we hope they will fill
out the survey without fear
of retribution.”
Hudgens said his organi
zation, or camp, has approx
imately 150 members. There
are more than 100 such
camps in Georgia. The local
camp celebrates its 25th
anniversary next year.
“The city of Warner
Robins has contacted us
about working on two ceme
teries in the city,” said
Hudgens.
The local camp observes
the annual Lee-Jackson Day
as well as Confederate
Memorial Day. Last year

Hudgens said that the
long-term goal of the camp
is to acquire a small plot of
ground on which to place a
permanent memorial to
Confederate veterans.
“We don’t need a big piece
of ground, just a quarter
acre,” he said. “Something
that is too small to develop
but too large to ignore.”
The camp already has the
memorial; they just need a
place to put it. The memori
al is a large block of granite
in which would be placed the
Confederate Battle Flag.
“Again we come up against
political correctness,” said
Hudgens. “All we want is to
honor these brave
Americans.”
