Houston County tennis squads still
seeking answers to 1-AAAAA foes
By JOE SERSEY

WARNER ROBINS -
Houston County’s tennis
team continued to strug
gle against opponents in
its new region 1-AAAAA.
The Bears and Lady
Bears fell to Coffee County
3-2 and 4-1 respectively.
“Our region is unbe
lievable,” said head coach
Julie Humphries. “It is
very strong. If we were
still in our old region, we’d
win it.”
Humphries has only two
seniors, both on the girls’
team, from last year’s
squad and as a result of
the new schedule and his
torically strong opponents
like Lowndes and Colquitt
counties, the Bears and
most of them came from
four Gladiator errors.
Against Westside, how
ever, they put together six
hits in the two run-scoring
innings.
“You kind of have to
name your poison,” Gentry
said. “We want them to be
aggressive, but we were too
aggressive in the first two
innings.”
In the first and second
inning, Gentry could almost
see history repeating itself.
“Against Clarke, we
swung at some of the ugliest
pitches,” he said. “We were
swinging at pitches in the
dirt and over our heads.”
Monday night, the Bears
didn’t hesitate to attack
the ball. The difference was
they were connecting, but
the balls went straight at a
defender.

The Bears
Such was the case for
Central Fellowship Monday
at home against Tiftarea.
The Lancers walked and
hit batters - three in the
first inning alone - and
booted enough balls for the
Panthers to put up 17 runs
in four innings, the point in
which the game was called
- a shutout for the visitors.
“We played horrible,” said
Lancers head coach Mark
Gentry whose squad fell to
0-3 - they were supposed

Westside’s Cori Robertson dives late into first after a strikeout Monday in Macon.
Following the “K,” the ball temporarily evaded Houston County catcher Casey Stuart.
Stuart recovered and threw to Bears first baseman Winfield Tufts for the out.
against Stratford Tuesday,
weather permitting. “It was
just one of those nights.
We couldn’t get anything
going.”
Still, he added, there
was plenty to be optimistic
about.
For starters, even though
Central Fellowship man
aged only one hit, it was a
good one as Logan Dunaway
drove a ball to the deepest
part of the ballpark that
nearly cleared the fence. He
ended up with a double.
Paul Pow. That was also in
straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.
The girls are now 2-6
overall and the boys are 1-
8, having played one more
match than the girls.

Second, there was no
admission of defeat.
“They’ve got some good
hustle,” said Gentry, who
wasn’t making excuses
- Tiftarea was not with
out talent after all - but
also pointed out he was
saving his aces in prepara
tion for teams within the
division. “They never gave
up. Overall they have good
heart.
“They’re just trying to

to realize the dream of

two, “His wife is from
