Francona prefers not to look back
By PATRICK FINLEY
Scripps Howard News
FORT MYERS, Fla.
- Terry Francona still has
friends on the Philadelphia
Phillies. Heck, he wrote
the Philadelphia equip
ment manager, Frank
Coppenbarger, into the
Phillies’ copy of the Boston
lineup card on Sunday. He
was hitting fourth, between
David Ortiz and Manny
Ramirez.
But talking about his man
aging stint in Philadelphia
isn’t easy. In a 10-minute
span, Francona ran the
gamut of emotions that most
people feel when they’ve
been fired.
The Red Sox skipper man
aged the Phillies from 1997-
2000, finishing third twice
and fifth twice before being
canned.
There’s no closure for
Francona yet but it’s get
ting easier for him to talk
about his time managing in
Philadelphia. Maybe win
ning the World Series has
something to do with it;
maybe the passage of time
does. He’s not sure.
Francona went 65-97 in
2000, his final season in

He struck out seven, walked

Crabtree relied on his
curve to keep the Hornets
at bay.
He struck out 12 and
walked one, allowing only
five hits.
The Hornets had a chance
to tie the score in their half
of the first.
Carsten Franklin dou

“Being fired, it’s really a
difficult thing to handle,”
Francona said. “I’d have
fired me too. I’m not say
ing somebody screwed up.
You’re with those people
every day, man, and you feel
like you let a lot of peo
ple down. Your self-esteem
takes a pounding. It’s just a
difficult thing to be able to

It’s human nature to think
about these things in retro

that haunts you.
“In Philadelphia, the
worse things got - and this
is probably absurd thinking
- I kind of had that feel
ing like, ‘I don’t wanna be

said.
Fans in Philadelphia got
annoyed when Francona

sleeve windbreaker, instead
of a jersey.
“The more it bugged
them, the more I’d wear it,”
he said, “even when I didn’t

the reasons it didn’t work.
“I think the thing they
wanted me to do was lose it
and start shedding clothes
and throwing (things),”
Francona said. “I didn’t
think that was right. My’
personality in Philadelphia
probably never was what
they were looking for in the
first place.
“And I wasn’t an old
Phillie. I think with some
people in the organization,
not being an old Phillie,
you’re never going to be a
Phillie. And that’s just kind
of the way it was.”
As his final season came
to a close, Francona was
hated by Philly fans. He’d
park his car in a different
spot every day.
“They never found me,” he
said. “I’d just sneak out.”
The day he was fired,
Francona’s tires were
slashed.
A year later, he returned to
Veterans Stadium as a scout
for the Indians, and was
assigned a security guard to
protect him. Francona asked
him why he was there.
“He said, ‘Didyou forget?”’
Francona said. “Sometimes
it just takes time for that to
go away.”
