Course offered for
families of mentally ill
By CHARLOTTE PERKINS
HHJ Lifestyle Editor
BONAIRE - Do you have
a loved one who suffers from
mental illness? Are you try
ing to provide support and
care for someone with schiz
ophrenia, schizoaffective
disorder, bipolar disorder,
major depressive disorder,
obsessive-compulsive disor
der or other serious mental
problems?
If so, you are probably
dealing with problems and
stresses that many others do
not understand.
Here’s help.
A 12-session free Family
to-Family course for rela
tives of mentally ill persons
will start on Thursday,
March 31, at 6:30 p.m. at
Bonaire Baptist Church.
The nationally acclaimed
course, will be taught by two
volunteers from the Middle
Georgia chapter of the
National Alliance for the
Mentally 111, Lavonne Harn
and Mary Ann van
Hartesveldt, and provides
information, support, and
help with coping with the
problems of a mentally ill
relative.
The course, which has
been offered several times in
the past is also a way for
families of the mentally ill to
learn that the problems they
have been dealing with are
not unique.
As one parent put it, “I
thought nobody else had
ever gone through the prob
lems I have gone through
with my daughter until I
took this course. It was a
help to meet others who
have had the same experi
ences and to learn not to
blame myself.”
Harn, who recently
retired as vice president for
Patient Care at the Medical
Center of Central Georgia,
is a registered nurse and
holds bachelor’s and mas
ter’s degrees. She is a for
mer president of the
National Alliance for the
Mentally 111-Central Georgia
Inc., and has served on a
variety of community
boards.
Van Hartesveldt holds a
master’s degree in Mental
Health Counseling, and has

been an employment coun

years. She is a member of
the board of directors of
NAMI-Central Georgia and
active in community events.
The course will meet from
6:30 until 8:30 p.m. for 12
consecutive weeks. All mate
rials are free. It is strongly
recommended that partici
pants be willing to commit
for all 12 meetings. Bonaire
Baptist Church is located on
Ga. 96 East in the Bonaire
community.
To register for the course
or to get more information,
call Lavonne Harn at 213-
7080. The course is limited
to 18 participants and usual
ly fills up fast, so it is best
not to delay in registering.
Please note that Family
to-Family is an educational
and support course only for
family members of the men
tally ill. It not intended for
those who are themselves
suffering from mental ill
ness. Those individuals are
urged to seek medical help
and get into an appropriate
treatment program.
According to NAMI, mental
illness is not always curable,
but it is very treatable, and
modern psychiatry has
much to offer in the way of
therapy and new medicines.
NAMI is a nonprofit,
grassroots, self-help, sup
port and advocacy organiza
tion of consumers, families,
and friends of people with
severe mental illnesses,
such as schizophrenia,
schizoaffective disorder,
bipolar disorder, major
depressive disorder, obses
sive-compulsive disorder,
panic and other severe anxi
ety disorders, autism and
pervasive developmental
disorders, attention
deficit/hyperactivity disor
der, and other severe and
persistent mental illnesses
that affect the brain.
The local branch office of
NAMI is located at 209
Elberta Road. For informa
tion about membership and
other programs, call 328-
