Glavine approaches
300-win milestone
By STEVE MEGARGEE

Tom Glavine has
won two Cy Young
Awards.
He pitched eight innings of
one-hit ball in the final game
of the 1995 World Series.
But the New York Mets
left-hander says he probably
would rate joining the 300-
win club ahead of any other
achievement in his excep
tional career.
“To me, there’s no greater
club for a starting pitcher,”
Glavine said.
It’s a club on the verge
of growing more and more
exclusive.
Two years ago, Roger
Clemens became the 21st
pitcher in major league his
tory to win 300 games. Greg
Maddux joined him last sum
mer.
Glavine, who turns 39 on
March 25, needs 38 more
wins. He’s the only active
pitcher with at least a 50-50
shot of getting there.
New York Yankees right
hander Mike Mussina, 36,
has a 211-119 career record.
Mets right-hander Pedro
Martinez, 33, is 182-76.
They’re the only two pitch
ers 36 or younger with more
than 155 wins.
“I hate to see it,” Atlanta
Braves pitching coach Leo
Mazzone said. “Guys just
aren’t going to win 300 any
more.”

Maddux and Glavine through

haven’t played a full seven
innings this year.”
Their first game was a
five inning 11-1 win over
Northside to open the sea
son. Masters’ point was
that in the four subsequent
losses, the games have gone
seven innings, the players
haven’t.
“We’re trying to work in a
group that hasn’t had a lot of
varsity experience,” Masters
said. “We’re still learning to
work together.
Stewart allowed three hits
in five innings, striking out
eight and walking two.
The only serious threat
he faced was in the second
inning. Dublin had runners
on first and second and one
out.
He induced a grounder to
short for a 6-3 and then
Perry center fielder Mitchell
Fowler put on his traveling
shoes to run down a fly ball
to deep left center for the
third out.
In the third, Josh O’Neal
made up his error that
allowed a runner. He got
two outs and an assist in
that inning. He caught a pop
up, then with a runner on
first, dove to his left to snare
a line drive then doubled
off the runner to end the
inning.
Perry’s run came with two
outs. Fowler had singled with
one down, but was erased
on Robby Taylor’s fielder’s
choice.
Taylor moved to third when
Reber singled and scored on
Corey Jones’ single.
The Panthers had gotten
the primes of their careers,
sees plenty of reasons for the
lack of potential 300-game
winners.
“They don’t get enough
starts,” Mazzone said. “The
consistency of winning every
year the way Glavine and
Maddux have is near impos
sible, especially now with
five-man rotations ... no
complete games, the lower
ing of the mound.
“The whole environment
they’re pitching in, it’s not
easy.”
A look at the 300-win club
backs up Mazzone’s argu
ment.
Clemens and Maddux are
the only members who have
played their entire careers
after most teams had
switched from four-man to
five-man rotations.
A pitcher still must aver
age at least 15 wins over
those 20 seasons. Only 23
major league pitchers won
that many games last year.
With so many teams going
to their bullpens earlier in
the game, relievers often get
the decisions that used to go
to starters.
“It’s like the 20-game win
ner,” Mazzone said. “The 20-
game (standard) was based
on a four-man rotation, not
five.
“Now if you win 15 in
a five-man rotation, you’ve
had a hell of a year. It’s
not that you’re setting the
standards lower. It’s just
the environment that you’re
in.”
only one hit off of starter
Ben Cochran, a single in the
third, before their three-hit
onslaught put them back
within two, 3-1, after six
innings.
Shane Ashley came on to
finish the game for Perry. He
had two outs when Dublin’s
Brett Mitchell hit a blister
ing line drive to third that
glanced off of Terry.
Mitchell got credit for a
hit, his second of the game.
He stole second. David New
was then hit by a pitch and
was awarded first.
With two outs, Dublin’s
David Shepard hit a slow
roller to short. New beat the
throw to second and Mitchell
rounded third and sped for
home. The throw bounced in
the dirt and Mitchell scored.
“We’re just starting to
hit,” Barham said. “(Jesse)
Coxwellgotabighit. Mitchell
had two hits tonight and
New is starting to hit.”
Coxwell’s double in the
sixth earned him Dublin’s
only RBI.
Perry ended the night with
four hits, 10 strike outs and
four errors.
“We can’t strike out 10
times, give up four unearned
runs and expect to win,”
Masters said. “We’re just not
playing. We’re not compet
ing.”

NCAA tournament bracket - from A to Z
By JOHN LINDSAY
Scripps Howard News

Filling out an NCAA
Tournament bracket can be
a daunting task. So here’s
all you need to know from
A to Z.
A- is for Arizona
senior guard Salim
Stoudamire, the best shoot
er in the field after leading
the nation with a stellar 53
percent from 3-point range.
The Wildcats, No. 3 seeds in
the Chicago region, will go
as far as Stoudamire takes
them.
B- is for Boston College,
our pick as the highest
seed to go out by the end
of the first weekend. The
Eagles, No. 4 seeds in the
Chicago region, will likely
go down to the Alabama-
Wisconsin-Milwaukee win
ner in the second round.
C- is for Connecticut,
the only team with a
chance to repeat. The defend
ing champion Huskies, sec
ond seeds in the Syracuse
regional, roar into the tour
ney with 10 wins in their
last 12 games.
D- is for - who else?
Duke, top seeds in
the Austin region. Mike
Krzyzewski needs only two
wins to pass North Carolina’s
Dean Smith for the most
NCAA victories (66).
E- is for Oklahoma State
coach Eddie Sutton,
who is tied with North
Carolina’s Roy Williams for
the most NCAA wins (35)
without winning a champi
onship. Can the Cowboys,
second seeds in the Chicago
region, repeat last year’s run
to the Final Four?
F- is for Nevada’s Nick
Fazekas, the best play
er in the tournament you’ve
never heard of. All the 6-11
sophomore did is score 21.4

the nation) while grabbing
9.4 rebounds (20th in the
nation).
G- is for Gonzaga,
suddenly the darling
choices for the TV talking
heads. Sorry folks but the
third-seeded ‘Zags are not
likely to get past improving,
athletic Texas Tech in the
second round of Albuquerque
regional.
His for how
come Alabama-
Birmingham got in? The
Blazers 21-10 record came
against competition soft
er than prime-time pro
gramming on the Disney

I- is for Illinois, who
at 32-1 came within
an Ohio State last-second
heave of becoming the first
team since UNLV in 1991 to
enter the NCAAs unbeaten.
With games in Indianapolis
and Chicago, the top-seeded
Illini have their ticket to St.
Louis all but punched.
J- is for Duke’s J.J.
Redick, the best free
throw shooter in the field.
Never mind that the 6-4
junior is third in the nation
this year at 93.3 percent.
He’s only the best from the
line in history at around 95
percent for his career.
K- is for Kentucky,
which has become a
bracket buster in recent sea
sons. Since winning it all
in 1998, the Wildcats have
been a 3 or higher seed five
times but have not gotten
back to the Final Four.
L- is for Louisville,
Kentucky’s Bluegrass
rival that seems to have got
ten shafted at only a 4 seed
in the brutal Albuquerque
regional. At 29-4, the C-USA
champs probably deserved
the 3 or 2 seed over Gonzaga
or Wake Forest.

M- is for Maryland,
missing from the
NCAA field for the first time
since 1993 (the fifth longest
NCAA run in the nation).
The Terps (16-12), who won
it all in 2002, were exiled to
the NIT after three ghastly
losses to Clemson.
N- is for North
Carolina, our grudg
ing pick to win it all. But will
the top-seeded Tar Heels’
superb talent win out over
their knucklehead tenden
cies and coach Roy Williams’
NCAA woes?
O- is for Oakland,
the only team in the
field with a losing record.
At 12-18, the Mid-Continent
Champion Golden Grizzlies
are going down to Alabama
A&M in Tuesday’s play-in
game.
P- is for Patriot League
champion Bucknell.
The Bison carry the upset
hopes of all Patriot fans con

is for the quickness
VVof Alabama A&M
guard Obie Trotter, who eas
ily led the nation in steals at
4.0 per game.
R- is for the rebound
ng of Utah’s Andrew
Bogut, the best big man in
the field. The 7-0 sophomore
from Australia has NBA
scouts’ attention after rank
ing third in the nation in
rebounding (12.0) while add
ing 20.6 points (15th in the
nation).
S- is for the Syracuse
regional, our pick as
the toughest regional. Why?
Because the top four seeds
- North Carolina, UConn,
Kansas and Florida - have
all been to the Final Four
since 2000. No other region

seeds that have won
the title since 1990, prov

a nice slogan, but not much
more.
U- is for underdog No.
12 seed New Mexico,
who will stun No. 5 Villanova
in a Syracuse Regional first
rounder. That will make it
16 of the last 17 years that a
12 seed has beaten a 5 seed.
V- is for Vermont’s
Taylor Coppenrath,
the leading scorer in the
field at 25.3 points per game.
Too bad the classy 6-9 senior
forward and his Catamounts
(24-6) couldn’t do better
than a 13 seed and a wick
ed first-rounder with No. 4
Syracuse.
W- is for Washington,
a curious choice
as the No. 1 seed in the
Albuquerque regional.
Does anybody really think
the Pac-10 champ Huskies
are better than any of the
No. 2s (Kentucky, Wake
Forest, Oklahoma State and
Connecticut)? -
V- is for the extra pres

Wildcats and Bearcats meet
Saturday in an Austin region
second-rounder. These bitter
rivals, located just 75 miles

1991 and may not for anoth

ing the regionals for cities?
We miss the days of the
East, Mideast, Midwest and
West.
Z- is for the zero wins by
No. 16 seeds. And don’t
look for Fairleigh Dickinson,
Montana, Delaware State or
the Oakland-Alabama A&M
winner to snap this epic 0-
