Perry Players has a winner with '1776'

PERRY - Don’t know
much about history?
Then it’s time you
learned, and the Perry
Players spring musical is a
great way to get started.
“1776” is a winner in
more ways than one. The
play itself offers up the
founding fathers as heroes
with human foibles and
presents the fledgling
nation as one with profound
divisions from the start.
And Perry Players makes
the most of the drama, the
dancing and the songs on a
small stage.
In a high dramatic point of
the musical, for example,
Jerry Dorriety, in the role of
Edward Rutledge of South
Carolina, sings ironically of
“rum, molasses and slaves,”
illustrating the commercial
ties between John Adams’
Boston and the Southern
colonies.
Under the direction of
Suzanne Webb, with Kathy
Thompson as musical direc
tor and Martha Alexander
as producer, Perry Players
prove once again that small
towns can have fine theater.
The set is simple but con
vincing and the cast is
straight out of the 18th cen
tury, with splendidly varied
costumes and wigs thanks to
Wanda Hulett Pat McCoy,
Pier Steffan and Katy
Thompson.
