BRAC
From page 1A
“BRAC is now in full
swing,” Kingston said. “It
appears that an impartial
panel has been nominated
and I anticipate the process
will be fair and thoughtful.”
He stressed that bases will
be evaluated by their mili
tary value.
“Our bases are in good
positions - they all have
strong infrastructure, new
missions and outstanding
community support. I am
cautiously optimistic that
we will do well in the BRAC
process.”
Of interest perhaps to
Houston County readers is
the presence of a former
Utah congressman, James
Hansen, among the presi
dent’s recommendations.
Hansen is a former repre
sentative for a state which is
home to one of the Air
Force’s three maintenance
depots. Robins Air Force
Base is one of them.
Kingston called Hansen
“a fair and reasonable guy,”
and credited him with being
experienced on military
issues.
“Jim served on the House
Armed Services Committee
for 20 years, and he repre
sented an Air Force depot, a
military training range and
an Army base,” Kingston
said. “This background
should be extremely helpful
to the panel - and to those
of us in southeast Georgia.”
Ron Asbell, communica
tions director for U.S. Sen.
Johnny Isakson, R-Georgia,
spoke Tuesday on the con
gressman’s behalf.
“(Isakson) has kept very
close contact with base com
manders and base officials,”
Asbell said. “Due to these
people not being able to dis
cuss BRAC, we have also
kept in contact with active
community organizations
such as the 21st Century
Partnership in Warner
Robins.”
Asbell said such base
booster organizations are
vital to making sure the
community is aware of
BRAC recommendations
and implications.
The Department of
Defense will make its list of
recommendations on May
16 and the BRAC
Commission has from that
date until Sept. 8 to issue its
final recommendations to
the president. The president
must accept or reject the list
in its entirety within 15
days.
If the president approves
the list, Congress has 45
days to reject it before it
becomes law.
