WARNER ROBINS - The
city is negotiating with Wal-
Mart after the retail chain
asked for changes to a
planned extension of South
Davis Drive.
The extension will con
nect Russell Parkway to a
new Wal-Mart Supercenter
being constructed along
Booth Road.
The City Council voted
Thursday night to authorize
the mayor to sign an agree
ment that is fair and equi
table as costs are deter
mined by city staff for Wal-
Mart’s proposed changes for
the road. The vote was 5-0-
1, with Councilman Terry
Horton abstaining and
Mayor Donald Walker and
councilmen Steve Smith,
Matt Stone, Grady
Clemonts and Dean Cowart
in favor.
The city’s original plan for
the road was Three lanes,
with deceleration lanes on
Russell Parkway. Wal-
Mart’s plan is for five lanes,
which would require
changes to Davis Drive
north of Russell Parkway -
not in the city’s original
plan.
The city approved an
agreement on March 21
with Eric Zorn as trustee of
Wal-Mart Business Trust,

According to The College Board,
which publishes the SAT, there are
many changes. One is the addition
of a writing section where students
write an essay taking a stand on an
issue, similar to a college exam. This
section includes sentence comple
tion questions.
The math section includes topics
from a third-year college prepatory
math curriculum, and quantitative
comparisons have been eliminated.
The critical reading portion
includes short and long reading pas
sages.

Local leaders
optimistic
about Perry
spec building
By CHARLOTTE PERKINS
HHJ Staff Writer
PERRY - How long is that
big brick building going to
stand empty in that “field of
dreams” off Perry Parkway?
Was it a mistake to build it
in the first place?
Is Elvis really hiding out
there?
The questions and the
occasional jokes about the
four years the building has
remained a shell keep com
ing, but • local officials
remain unified on one cen
tral point:
When it comes to attract
ing industrial site-hunters
to Houston County, having a
“spec” - or speculative -
building is a basic require
ment for staying in the
game.
Larry Snellgrove, chair
man of the Houston County
Development ' Authority,
calls it “bait.”
“You have to have it to get
people to come,” Snellgrove
said in a recent interview,
emphasizing that the build
ing is being shown to
prospects frequently, and
that company leaders seek
ing sites for relocation want
to see buildings, not just
land.
County Commission
Chairman Ned Sanders calls
it a “dilemma,” expressing
some frustration with the
length of time it’s taking,
but acknowledging that the

In 1980, Steve Davison
had dreams of making it big
in the power-washing busi
ness. But when it seemed
like he was spending more
time explaining what power
washing was than actually
making money doing it, he
knew he needed to find a
way to cut costs.
“I was spending a lot of
money shipping chemicals
down from Atlanta,” he
said. “So I asked a friend
‘Can’t I make this stuff
myself?’”
