Mackey runs to state title

PERRY - Lana Mackey pre

to see her hanging around with
nerdy guys with glasses.
She might, but it’s more the
fact she just doesn’t care to
be placed within stereotypical
circles.
“I just don’t want them (col
lege scouts) to think that’s all
I’m about,” said the 17-year-old
Westfield junior, who was the
Lady Hornets’ pitching ace last
year and is expected to be again
when they start up again in
the fall. “That all I do is stand
inside that circle. I want them
to know I’m an athlete.
“I think that will help me
more than if they think all I can
do is pitch.”
It’s important to her because
she doesn’t just want to play

Houston County players congratulate Groves on a game well-played after the Bears had beaten them 2-1 in the first round of the AAAAA state
playoffs April 28. After beating East Coweta 1-0 to qualify for the quarterfinals in soccer for the first time in school history, Houston County will
try to take that one step further when they host Lassiter at 7 p.m. Saturday at Tanner Field.

WARNER ROBINS - Houston County hosts
second-ranked Lassiter at 7 p.m. Saturday at
Tanner in the AAAAA quarterfinals.
“Lassiter played tremendous defense,” said
Bears head coach Chris McCook. “They have
allowed only five goals all season, with two of
those coming in the last game.”
Lassiter defeated Harrison 3-2 to advance.
There's no way to 'bridge' the gap
My Muffin plays
bridge. It’s
a sport and
there’s gambling. There
are also professional
bridge players.
Fortunately, she hasn’t
bet the farm, but a dollar
here and a dollar there,
and it soon adds up.
It’s a sport because it
is competition between
teams whose members
can’t talk to each other
about anything but fam
ily, medical problems and
lunch.
Muffin is a good bridge
player, but you couldn’t

she added she would if it came
down to it. She’s trying to obtain
a scholarship to a Division I
school first. (This summer she
is going to play softball with a
travel team from the Atlanta
area.)
To that end, she also plays
and excels at basketball.
And last year she took up
track.
“I thought it would help me
stay in shape for softball,” she
said.
Now, she is excelling in it.

The Trojans use two keepers, senior Durk
Chance and junior Casey Neel.
“We play both,” said Lassiter head coach Neil
Bloom. “We are strong defensively and have 14
asking bridge players how
their day went. Don’t
ask.
They will tell you they
never get any cards.
The only thing I’ve ever
seen upset Muffin more
than bridge is knitting,
crocheting or sewing.
I must admit, she has a
colorful vocabulary.
I have tried my hand at
the game. Like golf, it was
another pastime I was
forced to give up because
of a lack of ability.
But bridge affected me
differently than golf.
