CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)
- Carolina Panthers linebacker
Mark Fields will miss the 2005
season after a recurrence of
Hodgkin’s disease, his agent
said.
Fields, 32, sat out the 2003
season while he battled the dis
ease but came back last year to
earn a trip to the Pro Bowl. He
declined to sign Carolina's offer
of a contract extension in March,
saying he wanted to wait until
after an annual medical checkup
that was part of the cancer treat
ment.
Doctors discovered during
tests this week that the Hodgkin's
disease has returned and is in its
early stages, agent Jim Steiner
said.

BOSTON (AP) - Two Boston
Red Sox fans who scuffled with
New York Yankees outfielder
Gary Sheffield during a game last
month won’t be charged after a
court dismissed the case for lack
of evidence.
The clerk magistrate said there
was no probable cause to charge
Christopher House and Matthew
Donovan with misdemeanor
disorderly conduct. House and
Donovan were ejected from
Fenway Park on April 14 after
House appeared to make con
tact with Sheffield as the player
chased down a ball in the out
field.

(AP) - The NHL and the play
ers' association met for just over
three hours in the first round of
labor negotiations in two weeks.
The sides will get together
again in Toronto on Friday, as
previously planned, and already
have two bargaining sessions
scheduled for each of the next
two weeks.
Both sides declined comment
until Friday when this week’s talks
wrap up.

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia Tech
point guard Jarrett Jack entered
his name in the NBA draft, but
he won’t hire an agent and is still
torn about whether to return for
his senior season with the Yellow
Jackets.
Jack’s decision will allow him
to work out for NBA teams, giving
himself a better idea of where
he would be picked in the June
28 draft.

- Trying to become the first
LPGA player to win six straight
tournaments, Annika Sorenstam
instead had one of her worst
rounds in recent memory. She
shot a 5-over 76, leaving her
nine strokes behind leaders Silvia
Cavalleri and Catrin Nilsmark at
the Michelob Ultra Open.
Nilsmark and Cavalleri are
leading at 4-under 67. Cristie
Kerr, Kristen Samp, Leta Lindley,
Laura Diaz and Jill McGill are at
3 under.

to take the lead in the Wachovia
Championship.
Garcia earned a two-shot
advantage over defending cham

Mooney stops down at Air Force
DENVER (AP) - Chris Mooney
stepped down after one sea
son as coach at Air Force to
take the open coaching spot at
Richmond.
Mooney, an Air Force assis

ROME (AP) - Fernando
Verdasco took advantage of Andy
Roddick’s good sportsmanship,
ousting the top seed with a 6-
7 (1), 7-6 (3), 6-4 victory after
Roddick overturned a double
fault that would have ended the
match.
Roddick was leading 5-3 in the
second set and had triple match
point when Verdasco appeared to
hit his second serve just long. The
line judge called the ball out but
Roddick said the ball was in after
checking the mark left in the clay,
giving Verdasco an ace.
Verdasco then saved two more
match points, held serve, and
broke Roddick to even the sec
ond set at 5-5. The 21-year-old
Spaniard broke to win the first
game of the third set and main
tained the lead.
Thomson pitches three hitter to lead Braves
By PAUL NEWBERRY
AP Sports Writer
ATLANTA - After watch
ing a teammate botch a
grounder
leading off the
ninth, John
Thomson
turned
around to
pitch out of
the stretch.
Braves 9,
Astros 3
And that’s when it hit
him.
“I realized it was the
first time I had been in the
stretch since the fourth
batter of the first inning,”
Thomson said, as if he really
didn’t believe it himself.
Thomson pitched a three
hitter and retired 27 of the
last 29 batters for his first
complete game since 2003,
leading the Atlanta Braves
past the slumping Houston
Astros 9-3 on Thursday
night.
Adam Laßoche homered
and had a career-high four
RBIs for the Braves, who
pulled a half-game ahead of
idle Florida for the top spot

My frustration level at
golf was caused by my total
inability to hit the ball any
where away from water. Any
anger I felt was based on the
magnetic pull of H2O.
I don’t feel anger when
playing bridge; I’m overcome
by fear.
In bridge, there’s math
involved. Whereas, in golf I
seldom had to count beyond
10 per hole. In bridge there
are all kinds of counting
going on.
The pressure was too
much. Watching me count
cards, you’d think it was strip
poker as I removed shoes and
socks to get beyond 10, and
other articles to get to above
20. Beyond 23 and I’m done.

10th win in 13 games.
Thomson (3-2) gave up
two runs in the first but
dominated the rest of the
way. He also had an RBI
single in the sixth, when the
Braves blew open the game
with their second four-run
inning.
“My job is to go out there
and put zeros up,” Thomson
said. “You’re a little bit
relieved when your team
scores a lot of runs. On the
other hand, you can’t relax.
I go out there with the same
intensity that I would in a
0-0 game.”
Thomson was ahead in
the count most of the night,
throwing first-pitch strikes
to all but eight of the 31
hitters in his first com
plete game since Aug. 24,
2003, while with the Texas
Rangers.
“When they know they’re
not going to get ball one,
ball two, they’ve got to put
the ball in play,” he said.
“That works to my advan
tage. When they’re getting
aggressive early in the count,
I can throw more balls out
count to 11 until the doc
tors removed the additional
appendage.
And after the counting was
done, I was then required to
bid - but wait, it depended on
my count.
There are rules about bid
ding based on count. Four
points for an Ace, three for
a King, etc., unless the said
card isn’t protected, then you
can’t count it.
I actually tied my fingers
into knots trying to count by
the rules.
The pressure didn’t end
with the counting. Next, I
had to bid.

of the strike zone.”
The Astros have lost
eight straight road games,
dropping to 1-11 outside of
Houston.
This is their worst stretch
away from home since they
lost 10 straight road games
from May 16-June 8, 2000.
Laßoche has seven RBIs
over the past two games.
Coming off a three-double
performance the day before,
he hit a three-run homer
over the center-field wall in
the first inning.
Notes: Astros IB Jeff
Bagwell didn’t play because
of a sore right shoulder. ...
Andruw Jones was a late
scratch because of an ach
ing back and didn’t get in a
game for the first time this
season. ... Houston has lost
three in a row and nine of

My greatest fear was win
ning the bid and having to
play the cards.
Your partner lays her cards
face up on the table and you
have to play both hands. That
hand is called the dummy.
A misnomer when I’m play
ing. I’m always the dummy.
In spades, you bid the
number of tricks you have
to make. In bridge you have
to take six tricks before you
even start counting your bid.
That means if I bid two, I
have to take eight.
Women are ruthless. Bridge
is like life. Women suck you
in, make you feel confident
then double you and make
you go set.
In Bridge points are like
money. You’re set and they’ve
doubled their money. Bridge
is nerve wracking.

The 400 came into the

they talked me into it at the

Her finish: Fourth, and

Back then she said she
didn’t know how to run it.
Now, and after a condition
ing program that included
training/running with and
against the boys, she has a
gameplan.
“I like to let them (female
competitors) get out in front
of me for the first 100,” she
said, “(but) stay close. Then
draw even on or about the
next 200, get ahead by the
third leg and then use the
last 100 for kick.”
Even then she’s learned
to be flexible.
“I couldn’t do that at
state,” she said. “Because
the other girl (the one who
finished runner-up) was
really going hard. I had to
go right after her.”
The bottom line is, she
might prefer squares but
that doesn’t mean she can’t
run circles around the oppo

game.
“Houston County is a very
good team, so we’ll have to
stick closely to our game
plan,” Bloom said, “a pos
session type of attack and
getting nine men behind
the ball on defense.”
Visiting coaches have said
that Tanner’s large field
has helped the home team,
but Bloom doesn’t expect
Tanner’s 80-plus yards
width to affect the Trojans.
“Our field is wide, so
we’re used to it,” he said.
“We need to improve on
playing the ball to certain
areas of the field and put
ting the ball in the goal
- the final touch.”
