It's almost
over...almost
over...almost over
After taking a chemistry
exa.m. last Thursday night,
I did not have anything due
until Monday at noon. The
project that was due was a
ten page research paper.
I decided that I would
take my time and split up
the work over the span of
the next few days so that I
wasn’t overloaded. Well, it
didn’t quite work out that
way. Here is a timeline of
what took place:
Friday:
Noon- Wake up. 72 hours
left before paper is due,
which is a.m.ple time to
write it. Therefore, I decide
to see what Cliff Huxtable is
doing and plan to start writ
ing later in the afternoon.
6 p.m.- Don’t technically
have any work done on the
paper, but I have made a
crucial decision about my
dinner plans for the night.
II p.m. - Finally sit down
with the intention of writing
the paper. Write two very
good sentences before I
remember that Fresh
Prince of Bel-Air is on,
which ends the night’swork
on the paper.
Saturday:
1 p.m..- Drive back home
for the night to see my mom
for Mother’s Day. On the
way home, I decide that it
will be easy to get most of
the writing done that night
because things won’t be
very hectic.
11 p.m. Decide that part of
the brainstorming process
should include watching the
NBA Playoffs. Although I
still haven’t made it out of
the first paragraph, I’ve
decided on some good ideas.
Sunday:
2 p.m.- Eat lunch with
fa.m.ily in Macon, then
drive back to Athens to
spend the entire day writing
the paper.
5 p.m. - Never made it to
the computer, went straight
to the bed and slept until...
9 p.m. - Once again, TV
seems more important, so I
put off writing until...
11 p.m. - Finally decide to
do some research on the
topic. Get about 4 or 5
sources when I start feeling
sleepy. Decide to find some
change and go downstairs to
buy a Mello-Yellow. Pay for it
entirely in nickels.
1 a.m. - Research done.
Take a short break and talk
to friends from high school
on the Internet.
2 a.m. - Back for another
Mello-Yellow. Make an out
line and start thinking of
how to put things together.
6 a.m..- Not exactly sure
where this four hour slip
ca.m.e in. Thought I was
working on schedule, next
thing I know it’s light out
side. Have to pick up the
pace.
10 a.m..- After ingesting
enough sugar in the form of
soft drinks to turn my blood
to syrup, catch second wind.
Proofread the paper.
10:45 a.m..- Decide I don’t
like the conclusion, but I
have to change two more
paragraphs for my new one
to work. Typing faster than
ever before.
11:25 a.m..- Finish writing
and print off the paper. Now
to catch the bus and drop it
off.
11:35 a.m.- Miss the bus.
11:50 a.m.- Finally the
bus comes again.
11:59 a.m.- Walk into my
professor’s office, and he
tells me he’s never had any
one turn in something
exactly on time. In the nick
of time to be exact, I tell
him.
12:20 p.m. - Collapse on
bed from exhaustion, dread
ing studying for one last

My favorite television
series is headed off the air
Friday, and not by choice.
“Star Trek: Enterprise,”
one of the most interesting
sci-fi series on network tele
vision, was cancelled earlier
this year and will end its
four year run with a two
hour series finale Friday
evening.
It’s symptomatic of
what’s wrong with prime
time television, but despite
a dedicated fan base, the
United Paramount
Network, or UPN for short,
has decided to head in a dif
ferent direction. “Star
Trek” has been a bulwark of
Paramount Pictures since
the first Trek feature in
1979. But when the ratings
for “Enterprise” continued
to dip over the last two
years, Paramount threw the
series out like a bag of
moldy tangerines.
I guess we need another
five “Who’S Your Nanny?”
shows. Maybe we’re ready
for another dozen about

potential. While popular
shows like “Survivor” and
“Friends” may show us who
we are, “Star Trek” will
always show us who we can
be.
It seems like you hear a
snicker every time Star
Trek is mentioned in public,
but UPN doesn’t know
what they’re throwing
away. At least some incar
nation of “Star Trek” has
been on the air since “Star
Trek: The Next
Generation” hit the air in
1987, back when I was six.
You can still find old
episodes of Star Trek on
cable, but after Friday you
won’t see anything new. If
Paramount was smart,
they’d sell the series to the
Sci-Fi Network, but they
probably won’t do that.
There’s too much risk of
ending up looking bad.
I keep hearing in the
media that “Star Trek” is
dying, that it’s run its
course. But I don’t believe
that, and I don’t think most
fans do either. When “Star

Friday, the franchise will
return to the people who
made it what it is.
In the 19705, a grass-roots
and determined group of
Trekkies turned the show
from a campy afterthought
into an instantly recogniza
ble part of American cul
ture. Through fanzines,
small conventions and
word-of-mouth praise, they
brought Trek back from the
dead. Now, more than thir
ty years later, who doesn’t
know Captain Kirk and Mr.
Spock?,.
While “Star Trek:
Enterprise” will end Friday,
the future of the “Star
Trek” franchise is not in
jeopardy. Fans will redis
cover what they loved about
“Star Trek,” and the voy
ages will continue, some
