Three Virginia natives in top 10 heading to Richmond
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Heading
into Friday’s FUNAI 250 at Richmond
International Raceway, four NASCAR
Busch Series full-time
drivers have a little
extra incentive.
Returning to their
“home” track are Jon
Wood, Stacy Compton,
Denny Hamlin and
Ashton Lewis, Jr.

Cup Series driver and Virginia native
Elliott Sadler joining the mix and this
Friday’s race will produce extra excite
ment under the lights.
All agree, though, that there isn’t a
rivalry among the four.
“I’m friends with Stacy, Jon and
Denny,” said Lewis. “But I want to be
the highest finishing Virginia driver
each week.
“It would be great to win this week

“We have to get our strength to
where we can match up,” Card said.
After spring football, the team will
resume weight training in June. On
July 22, Central Fellowship is hosting
its first Lancer Iron Man days.
According to Card, all Lancer and
Lady Lancer athletes will be put to the
test for prizes.
It will culminate Card’s summer
program.
During spring practice, he is stress
ing fundamentals and although his
primary concern is defense, Card is
also working on offense.
He has welcomed a couple of home
school players who look to make a con
tribution on the offensive line.
One, rising junior Bradford Jones,
says he came to Central Fellowship
because he wanted a chance to play
football.
The Lancers will travel to Briarwood
Friday night to cap their spring prac
tice with a 5 p.m. scrimmage.

Taylor looks for his team
to place in the top three in
each event.
The Demons 4xloo relay
team enters the contest
with a 52.55 region time. To
win at state they will need
to beat Creekside’s 41.84.
“To win they’ll need a low
41;” Taylor said. “We don’t
have the fastest relay, but
we win on technique.”
Taylor said that the hand
off, the way they come off
the blocks and enter turns
all factor into the team’s
success.
The 4xloo team is made
up of Dartez Walker run
ning first, followed by Laron
Scott then Tramarius Gray
and anchored by Maurice
Gray.
“Usually, your second guy
is the fastest on the team,”
Taylor said, “but these guys
all run about the same
times. All four are at about
10.8 in the 100.”
He says they can run a
10.2 and that’s what he’s
working on.
“We need to find a way
to knock off a tenth of a
second here and a tenth of a
second there,” Taylor said.
“At our first exchange, we
are running a 10.4 and the
second is 20.65 at the curve,
but at the hand-off its 22.”
He says his team is losing
two seconds in the handoff.
Walkers said that his job
is to get off to a good start
out of the blocks.
“Every time (after his leg)
I go to the coach. He gives
me the times for the first
leg,” Walker said. “To get
speed, you have to pump
your arms fast and get a
good handoff.”
It’s Laron Scott’s job to
get the lead.

Lewis, who is fifth in the NASCAR
Busch Series points standings, leads
the way for the Virginia natives and is
joined in the top 10 by rookies Hamlin
and Wood.
For Hamlin, racing at Richmond has
a couple of added bonuses.
“I grew up in Chesterfield (20 miles
south of Richmond), so I am going to
have a chance to see a lot of family and
friends,” said Hamlin. “My family pur
chased 125 tickets for all of our family
and friends, so I should have a pretty
good cheering section. Also, having
an off weekend next week gives me a
couple of extra days after the event to
hang out with them.”
Wood, who spent the last three sea
sons in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck
Series, is looking forward to this week
end’s race.
“We had a good test last week at
Richmond and feel confident that
we can finish in the top five,” said

Michael Stuart practices for the pole vault May 5 at the school.
“l concentrate on getting
the one in front,” he said.
“In the second leg, we’re
going to be in front.”
Tramarius Gray runs the
third 100.
“I have to get the baton
as quickly as possible,” he
said. “It’s better to get it
early.”
He says he knows he’s run
his portion fast enough if he
turns around and everybody
else is still running.
To get that good start, the
runners of legs two, three
and four use tape to mark
the distance from their
start point their teammate
is on his leg.
“We use a silent exchange, ”
Taylor said. “There’ll be so
much noise at state with
other teams calling out
exchange signals, we want
to avoid confusion.”
The runners will pace off
12 to 18 steps from their
position based on the loca
tion of their opponents’
runners.
If they are closer than
their teammate, the Demon

If Lewis, Hamlin and Wood continue
to excel, that friendly competition could
become a fierce rivalry.
WOLFE BACK IN NO. 6: Unilever Food
and Evemham Motorsports announced
this week that Paul Wolfe will be back
in the driver’s seat of the No. 6 Hungry
Drivers Dodge Friday night in the
FUNAI 250.
Wolfe, who will also drive at Dover
and Nashville, was behind the wheel
at Daytona, California and Las Vegas.
“Sitting on the sidelines the last few
weeks has been tough, so I’m thrilled
to be back in the seat this weekend,”
Wolfe said. “Ray has been working
hard to get this new team moving in
the right direction and I understand
that he needed his veteran drivers to
help him do that.
“They have made significant gains
over the last few weeks with improve
ments in just about every area.”

he hits that mark, the next

Maurice Gray anchors the
relay and either keeps the
lead or takes it on his leg.
With competitors in four
events, Taylor feels his team
has a good chance to hit the
top 10.
