Smith evaluates BRAC
recommendations
By TERESA D. SOUTHERN
HHJ Staff Writer
WARNER ROBINS -
Warner Robins Rotarians
had a chance to hear from
one of Houston’s County’s
experts on Base
Realignment and Closure -
Ron Smith, a consultant
with the 21st Century
Partnership, a base booster
group for Itobins Air Force
Base.
Smith spoke to the group
about the recent BRAC rec
ommendations and how
they may impact Robins.
“There is a lot of shifting
around of inventory that is
projected to go on over the
next couple of years,” Smith
said.
Smith also spoke about
how BRAC is expected to
affect the 19th Air Refueling
Group. Their mission was
already scheduled to depart
Robins, and Smith speculat
ed the base might gain a
new flying mission from the
Naval Air Station in Atlanta
that was recommended for
closure.
“Number one, we don’t
want to see the 19th Air
Refueling Group leave, but
the announcement for their
departure was made three
years ago,” Smith said.
He explained the purpose
of the mission being
realigned may be to put all
active duty tankers, such as
the 19th ARG’s KC-1355, all
in one or two locations.
“There were tough issues,
but they make a lot of sense.
I’m anxious to see data from
the BRAC commission about
where the Air Force ranks
Robins. We’re fighting like

heck, to not be added,”
Smith said.
In this fight, Smith said
it’s important that it be
shown that Robins AFB is
viable and can support exist
ing and future missions.
“It’s hard to look at BRAC
in isolation,” Smith said. “If
you change one decision it
will ripple through a lot of
areas.”
He said that community
support is also important.
“EDIMGIAFAD isn’t just
a ridiculous slogan.”
The letters stand for

Smith said the 21st

“We’ll remain a viable

we have a great product to
