Summer brings a variety of skin irritations
“What can I put on this
rash?” is one of the most
common questions asked of
pharmacists this time of
year. With everyone enjoy
ing outdoor activities, the
annoying itchy skin rashes
(from insect bites, sun and/
or soil exposure and every
thing in between) are an
inevitable side effect.
So how do pharmacists
answer that question? Well,
it depends on the rash and
what it was caused by. Not
all skin rashes are caused by
allergic reactions. Light- or
fair-skinned individuals may
develop a rash from sun
exposure. Small, reddish
blisters may appear in as lit
tle as a few hours after sun
exposure and may be
extremely itchy.
Use of high sun protection
factor (SPF) sunscreen can
help prevent this rash. Oral
antihistamines (i.e.,
Benadryl) may help with the
itching unless the rash is
widespread and the itching
is severe (and it can be, I’m

Another common summer
rash is contact dermatitis.
This is an allergic reaction
to something the skin came
in contact with. Poison ivy is
the most common form of
contact dermatitis; however,
related plants, metals, jewel
ry, perfumes, cosmetics,
dyes, and rubber products
can also be the cause.
The rash caused by poison
ivy, poison oak and poison
sumac is due to the presence
of an oily substance called
urushiol. Urushiol is easily
spread and stays active
quite a while; even a dead
plant can even cause allergic
reactions.
Urushiol can adhere to
anything and only a small
amount is required to cause
a reaction. It c&n easily be
transferred to your skin by
touching your clothing, yard

reaction can even occur if
you come in contact with the
smoke of the burning plants.
The best way to treat sus
pected exposure to any one
of these is to wash the area
with cool, soapy water to
minimize spread. Oral anti
histamines and topical
hydrocortisone cream may
also help. This treatment
will help with most all forms
of mild contact dermatitis;
however, a physician should
treat severe cases.
Calamine lotion is not
really that effective in treat
ing these rashes and, in my
opinion, neither is Benadryl
cream. Topically, hydrocorti
sone products are better.
Benadryl is much more
effective orally (however it
does cause drowsiness).
However, hydrocortisone
creams should not used on
certain types of itchy rashes
(i.e., chicken pox, fungal
infections) and should not
be used for long periods of
time, especially in children.

organisms called dermato

moist areas.
These rashes are called
tinea infections and are
named for the area of the
body in which they occur.
For example, tinea pedis
(feet) would be a fungal
infection of the skin of the
feet.
This is more commonly
know as athlete’s foot and is
treatable by any number of
the over-the-counter anti
fungal creams. Lamisil,
Tinactin, and Micatin are
some of the more common
name brands, however, I
encourage use of the lesser
expensive, but just as effec
tive, generic products.
When treating fungal
infections with these prod

your hands thoroughly
