Taking a look at the apple trees
It used to be that almost
every backyard had an apple
tree - one that provided
shade, held swings, and sup
plied food for the pantry.
Those so-called standard
apple trees were tall (up to
25 feet), massive, and hard
to pick, prune, and thin. Its
no wonder that these trees
have been conspicuously
absent from today’s smaller
building lots. However,
newer varieties of apples are
changing all this.
Modern growers are
choosing smaller trees called
miniatures, which grow only
6 to 8 feet tall and can be
grown in containers on a
porch or patio. Unlike the
more common dwarf fruit
trees, miniatures are geneti
cally programmed to stay
small all their lives. Dwarfs
and semi-dwarfs are grafted
onto special rootstock to
keep them from growing
tall. Dwarfs usually grow 8

Anna’s interest in news
papers is made more amaz
ing by the fact that English
is not her native language.
Anna was born in Ukraine
and moved to the United
States when she was 14. As
a result of her European
upbringing, she can speak
English, Russian,
Ukrainian, and a little
German, bordering on the
point in which people forget
numbers and simple say
“multi-lingual.”
“(Learning English) was
pretty hard. I didn’t know
anything when I came here.
I knew how to say ‘how are
you’ and stuff like that, but
nothing else,” said Anna,
who had to struggle her first
years in high school. “I was

Anna’s stepfather met her
mother while on vacation in
Ukraine. She came first to
Philadelphia and then to
Perry. Through her involve

has traveled all over
Georgia, Alabama and
Florida.
Anna says the hardest
thing about moving to
America was the distance
between everything and the
frequent use of automobiles.
“In the Ukraine you don’t
really drive. Most people
don’t own cars. You either
walk or take the bus or the
metro. Here you drive every

Apple trees pollinate best
when two or more varieties
bloom at the same time
within 100 feet of each
other. If your growing space
is small, depend on your
neighbor’s tree or buy a
specimen, with more than
one variety grafted onto the

To control insects and dis
eases, a spray application of
dormant oil in late winter,
either before or after prun
ing, is recommended to help
protect trees.
At harvest time, a waxy
coat on the skin and brown
seed color indicates
ripeness. But taste is the
truest sign. Take a bite. If
the fruit tastes sour and is
hard or brittle, wait. But if
the fruit tastes juicy and
sweet and is medium soft,
pick the rest. Ripe fruit sep
arates easily from the stem.
