Four receive Children's
Friend scholarship
From staff reports
Children’s Friend has
announced the winners of
the 2005 Mark A. Cohenour
Scholarship.
Among the nine recipients
are four from Warner
Robins: Russ Cooke, Karen
Hargrove, Lori Pekny and
Jessica Carlson.
The purpose of the Mark
A. Cohenour Scholarship is
to provide financial assis
tance to qualified employees
in pursuit of education
and/or training in their cho
sen field. Including this
year’s winners. Children’s
Friend has awarded this
scholarship to sixty-eight
employees.
Mark A. Cohenour was
born in Sacramento, Calif.,
on Oct. 30, 1968. Shortly
after his birth, he was diag
nosed with Dunchenne’s
Muscular Dystrophy.
Historically, the disease
results in loss of muscle use
and a short life of pain.
Typically, those diagnosed
with this disease die in their
early teens.
Those who knew Mark
were impressed with his
positive attitude and con
cern for others. He was
never one to complain. Tn
1978, 1980 and 1981 Mark
was selected as the Middle
Georgia Poster Child for
Muscular Dystrophy. In
1979, he was selected as the
Georgia State Poster Child.
Mark was a determined
young man. One of his main
goals was to receive a high
school diploma. In 1989, he
completed his high school
education, graduating from
Warner Robins High School.
On May 23, 1992, at the
age of 23, Mark passed away

Perdue seeks to protect
scholarships, pre-K programs
Special to the HHJ
Gov. Sonny Perdue has
announced a proposal for a
constitutional amendment
limiting the use of lottery
revenues to costs associated
with the HOPE scholarship
and Pre-K programs.
“As the HOPE and Pre-K
programs continue to grow
in popularity, we need to
make sure that lottery rev
enues go straight to these
two outstanding programs,”
said Perdue. “We cannot
allow money to be frivolous
ly spent on projects that
have nothing to do with col
lege scholarships or early
learning.”
Between the 1994 and
2003 fiscal years, legislators
appropriated over $l.B bil
lion in lottery revenue on
budget items outside of
HOPE and Pre-K programs.
For example, $2.5 million
was appropriated for a

Since taking office, Perdue
has put an end to the raid

“We must do all we can to
protect HOPE and Pre-K for
future generations,” he said.
“Siphoning money out of
lottery funds for pet projects
jeopardizes these two great

people of Georgia deserve
the opportunity to put a per

Perdue will include the
HOPE Chest amendment in
his 2006 legislative package.
