Drag Racing League Eastern
Conference Finals. There
were no individual winners
- last year there was, in
Madison DeFoor - but com
bined they earned enough
points to take top honors.
“It’s just amazing, really,”
said Silver Dollar Raceway
owner Ed Swearingen. “It’s
amazing how well these kids
can even drive those things.
“They’re the hardest thing
to drive I’ve ever seen. They
vibrate. They’re cramped
quarters and yet we contin
ue to see them getting better
and better all the time.”
Members of Team I were:
Justin Reeves, Parker Suggs,
Briggs DeFoor, Reba Sellers,
Calvin Monroe, Libby Head,
Kline Whitley, Schafer
Suggs, Robert Oliver and
A.J. Head. Team II members
were: Pope Sellers, Madison
DeFoor, Will Castleberry,
Kandy Sellers, Wesley Cox
and Brittany Harper.
ON SO-FAR-I: What’s the
furthest anyone’s ever come
to race at Silver Dollar
Raceway? Think a long way
away. No, think a LONG,
LONG way away ... Africa.

coach Steve Pender said the
best thing about the team
was its cohesiveness.
“Most of this team has
grown up together,” he said.
“Five of these guys played
on the Junior League team
which took third in the
state.
“These guys have been
playing some sort of baseball
since they were 10 years old.
They are familiar with each
other and we coaches know
what they are capable of.”
The team boasts five
pitchers the coaches are not
afraid to put on the mound
at any time. They are Chase
Brown, Logan Simmons,
Billy Fortenberry, Alex
Pender and Trevor Stahl.
Area fans might remem
ber that back in May 2000
Brown threw a perfect game
in Little League action. And
Pender was his catcher that
night.
“We have strong pitching
and hitting and great infield
defense,” Pender said. “This
is probably one of the best
teams to come along here
in several years. I expect a
lot of these guys to go to the
next level of baseball compe
tition. They are that good.”
Pender said that he did
not know much about the
competition they will face
at state but “We figure that
they will be tough.”
“I am concerned that the
field we will be playing on
is really too small for this
level of play,” he said. “It
will have 300-foot fences and
we would like to see a deeper
outfield. We have some guys
who can hit it out but then
so do the other guys. We will
just need some help from
our pitching.”
“They will do well,” he

So, they e-mailed tracks

Before long they were vis

of the story, as Paul Harvey

they like it so much they’re
going to stay and buy a home

To that end, Marise, who is

has gone back to Capetown
to get the family’s affairs in
order, while John is staying
at the track in a “glorious
guest house.” Or, at least
