I need help finding anti-spyware software
Dear TechnoFiles:
I read your article in
the Houston Home
Journal “I have a myste
rious file that appeared
on my desktop.” You
made a statement about
free Skybot Search and
Destroy on the Web site
www.safernetworking.or
g. I did not find this at
that site that was free.
When I typed in Spybot
Search and Destroy I got
a site which wanted me
to sign up for free online
degrees. Did I miss some
thing or am I confused
about what you said.
Which Web site can you
download this wonderful
free software? I enjoy
your articles and read it
every week. Thanks,
S. J.
Dear S.J.:
My apologies if I led you
astray with the Web site
address, and thank you for
the kind words. The correct
address is www. safer-net
working.org- note the dash.
The program, Spybot Search
and Destroy (S&D), is still
among the best available for
any price, and yet is free for
non-commercial use. PC
Magazine, which normally
does a great job at reviewing
new software, recently did
an evaluation of anti-spy
ware software in their July
issue, but neglected to cover

On Tuesday, person(s)

Spybot S&D. Their recom

is an excellent product, but
it isn’t free and in fact
requires a yearly subscrip

in my opinion the best pro

make your computer slow

havoc with your computer’s

Juvenile burglars
Between July 14 and
Tuesday, two juveniles, ages 14
and 8, who went into a house
and got a handgun from the bed
room of an Elko home. The vic
tim called to report the gun miss
ing after noticing the screen off
the window and checking the
house. As the deputy left two
boys on bikes said they knew
two boys who said they had a
gun and directed the deputy to
the boys’ grandmother's house.
She called and had the parents
and the boys come over to talk
with the deputy. The older boy
reportedly told the deputy in
front of his parents that he was
playing with it when it went off,
striking him in the hand. She
showed the deputy where he'd
hidden the gun, with a magazine
and eight round of ammo. The
two boys were turned over to
their parents.

Monday, Rodrigo Gianaas

Macon, was arrested for exces

Clueless
Dear Clueless:
Welcome to the world of
modern computing! To
answer you question: No,
you cannot use your old
cable with your new printer.
The USB (Universal Serial
Bus) cable that came with
your new printer is the stan
dard way of connecting
devices such as digital cam
eras, keyboards, printers,
scanners, etc., to your com
puter. Your old printer used
what is called a parallel
interface, which isn’t used
Thunderbird. The driver report
edly admitted to no having a
license when asked for it.
Not taking any tests
Christopher Lee Blocker, 33,
221 Ridgebend Drive,
Centerville, was stopped
Monday for no taillights. The
deputy reportedly observed the
driver unsteady on his feet and
while talking with him smelled
the strong odor of alcoholic bev
erage on his person. The driver
told the deputy it was the pas
senger. The driver reportedly
refused to take the voluntary
Alco-sensor test, which detects
the present of alcohol. At the jail
he refused to take any tests, the
state implied consent and a
blood test because he had taken
prescription Percoset and
Loratab and it would come back
in his blood, but he was not
under the influence. He was
charged with DUI-refusal and
no taillights.
Racing on the streets
Mark Lee Trasmer, 17, 306
Wake Forest Drive, Warner
Robins, and a 16-year-old boy
were each arrested for racing on
the streets, reckless driving and
speeding (85 mph in a 45-mph
zone) on Watson Boulevard at
Carl Vinson Parkway on
Monday. There were reportedly
side by side in a patrol car on
Watson Boulevard and acceler
ated as the light charged to
green. The deputy noticed both
of them were traveling above the
posted speed limit and were rac
ing. He activated radar and the
speed reported kept rising and
vehicle reached final speed of
85 mph. He activated light and
sirens, and both pulled in to the
Waffle House at Houston Lake
Road to stop. Both taken to
headquarters, Trasmer was
placed in holding cell and deputy
called the 16-year-old’s parents
and explained to the boy’s father
what happened. Both were
cited, Trasmer stayed in jail, the
16-year-old was released to his
father after juvenile case history
completed.

very often any more, and

it’s usually exclusively used
for older printers and some
older scanners. Parallel

with USB cables. Sorry!
If your computer is a desk

years old or so, you can pur
chase an USB adapter card
to install into one of your
free PCI slots (assuming you
have one free) on the system
board. This adapter card
will allow you to connect
your new printer and any
other USB devices you may
purchase to your existing
machine. This will require
you getting out your tool kit
and digging inside your
machine, so you may want
to take it to a local computer
repair shop to have this
done. Also, if you are using
Windows 98 or earlier on
this machine, you might
have some issues with driv

software that devices use to
run on your computer.
Windows XP has built-in
support for USB devices,
which makes it much easier
to install and configure
them.
If this sounds like too
much trouble, you may still
be able to find some new
printers that support a par
