LOCAL
Health department
proposed increase of fees
By RAY UGHTNER
HHJ Staff Writer
The Houston County
Health Department has pro
posed raising some of its envi
ronmental fees.
Houston County Health
Board Chairman Dr. David
Harvey said the Health
Department budget was
about $30,000 short this past
year, and proposed the fee
increase, “in effect to keep up
with the growth in the num
ber of homes and restau
rants.”
“The changes would put us
on par with others in the
state,” he said, “but with half
the people.”
Carla Coley, the environ
mental health manager, said
her office is beginning to see
more on site commercial
inspections.
“We need staff,” she said.
“We can’t attend training.”
Based on numbers from the
past year, the change in fees
would result in $113,640
more in revenue from fiscal
year 2005’s $170,355.
Commissioner Tom
McMichael said the increase
would not impact taxpayers,
calling the fees “an impact or
user fee.”
Harvey said the impact fee
would be S2OO on a $200,000
house.
The commission set up an
ad hoc committee of
McMichael and
Commissioner Larry
Thomson to meet with Health
Department staff, to go over
the numbers, and present it
to the full county commission
for action at the next meeting.
In other business, the coun
ty commissioners approved
three personnel requests and
purchased several vehicles
from the local Ford dealers.
The board approved:
• Hiring of Russell Walker
as an assistant district attor
ney at $21.93 an hour or
$45,614.40 a year;
• Hiring Peggy Meadows as
a legal secretary in the Public
Defender’s Office at $14.24 an
hour, or $29,619.20;
• Promoting two clerks in
the Tax Commissioners office
because of additional respon
sibilities from online pay
ments, effective Aug. 1.
