MOLESTER

Kelly Burke was quick to
deflect criticism, saying he
had nothing to do with the
decision for the student to
be enrolled in Perry High.
School administrators
made the decision, and
Burke said administrators
didn’t feel the boy was a
threat to children in his own
age group.
Houston County Board of
Education Chairman Pam
Greenway said although she
could not discuss issues
relating to a particular stu
dent, “generally speaking,
after being convicted, a stu
dent is allowed to return to
school after spending a pre
requisite time at
Crossroads, and the admin
istration determines he is
not a threat to other stu
dents.”
The Crossroads Center is
Houston County’s alterna
tive school.
“The federal government
expects us to educate every
one,” Greenway said, adding
that “restrictions are placed
on the students and they are
closely monitored.”
Burke said there are other
convicted sex offenders in
Houston’s public schools,
most for statutory rape. He
also noted that juvenile
offenders are monitored
much more closely than
adults.
Before he was convicted,
Nicole Poss said, the moles
ter had to wear a monitoring
device and attended

Child molesters are not to
have contact with anyone
under 18, Burke explained.
“His probation was
changed to ‘no contact
under age 13’ to allow him
to complete school,” Burke
said.
John Trussed, chief pro
bation officer for the
Houston County office of the
state Department of
Corrections, said “we’re
dealing with this case as we
are with others.”
The 18-year-old molester
was arrested June 30 for
violating his probation.
Trussed could only confirm
the arrest, but could not dis
cuss details.
“We ready have to decide
the seriousness of the viola
tion before taking it to the
judge,” Trussed said.
In general, he said, the
probation office has the
authority to hold violators
for a few days and release
them without charges.
“We use graduated disci
pline,” Trussed said. “Part
of our treatment for sex
offenders is a polygraph
test. We find it very effec
tive, along with surveil
lance.”
He added that family sup
port is essential in such
cases.

them to tell a teacher or the

a problem, not to bring a

The Posses have already
reported to authorities that
the teen rode his bike back
and forth to school past
Perry Primary School - and
District Attorney Burke said
the boy was told to change
his route.
“Often times, if it is not a
willful violation, we give
him a chance to cure his vio
lation,” Burke said.
Burke cited a case in
which a Warner Robins man
was released from jail after
five years and returned
home to live.
“When he went to jail
there were no schools or
parks nearby, but while he
was in jail a day care opened
about 980 feet from his
home,” Burke said. “He had
to move.”
Chris Poss, the victim’s
father and a relative of the
molester, said the family was
given seven days to move
from a home next to
Ochlahatchee Park - “then
it became ‘whenever you
can.’”
Trussell defended the
measure.
“Our goal is to bring them
into compliance,” he said. “I
make people move all the
time. The hardship is on
them.”
Chris Poss said that as

soon as there is a violation,
“they should come down like

But Trussell cautioned
that the court expects pro
bation officers to be reason
able.
“Every time something
comes in we check it out,”
he said. “There are about 40
persons we’ve kept in jail in
Houston County.”
The molester was convict
ed as an adult, but as a first
offender, according to court
records. Under first-offend
er status, the crime will be
removed from his record if
he does not violate proba
tion for 10 years. His proba
tion can also be reduced,
according to the court
records.
He is listed on the state
sex offender registry, but a
photo has not yet been post

“They do finally have the

Poss said.
Burke said he doesn’t
know why the photo is not
on there, but it’s not his
responsibility.
“The site is managed by
the Georgia Bureau of
Investigation and the
Department of Corrections,”
Burke said.
Nicole Poss is also con
cerned about the high rate
of recidivism for child moles

molester will re-offend.
“I don’t want him to live
like that,” she said. “I want
