A Wing, a prayer: Lancers set to get things started
By DON MONCRIEF
HHJ Sports Editor
“Just pray for us.”
Those were Central
Central Fellowship
at Tattnall Square,
Thursday, 8 p.m.
Square.
“We know they’re a
perennial powerhouse,”
he said. “Coach (Barney)
Hester every year has them
ready to play tough and
I’m sure this year is not
going to be any different.”
He can hope - and pray
- they’re not too ready,
however, because last
year’s final wasn’t pret
ty. The Trojans beat the
Lancers 49-6 and started
them down a long road of
11 straight losses.

This year Card said he
didn’t even need to exchange
game tape or send someone
to their scrimmage, which
was on the same night as
the Lancers’.
“I’m pretty sure he’s
going to do the same thing
he’s been doing to us for
the past three years and
for the past 10,” Card said,
“run the option at us and
dare us to stop it.”
To that end, Card said
the Lancers have been busy
working to defend it.
“We’re trying to ensure
everyone on defense is
lined up in the right spot,”
he said. “And going where
they’re supposed to be
going.”
On offense, Central
Fellowship might just have
the upper hand.
They know what Tattnall
runs, but it’s entirely pos
sibly, if maybe not likely,
without the exchanging of
film and unless they did

Harvey of Greensboro and
Elaine Carsel of Athens
each shot a three-over-par
75 to share the lead. Liz
Butler of Columbus and
Mary Helen McElreath are
tied for third, one stroke

This marks the third year
in a row that Harvey has
shared the opening-round
lead.
In 2003, she was tied
with Claudeen Lindberg of
Atlanta following an open

on to win the Championship,
her second such title, in
a one-hole playoff with
Harvey the following day.
Harvey again faced a
playoff scenario last year,
but this time emerged vic
torious.

They are schools well

and in fact Starr’s Mill
was the state champion.
This year, Houston

them all some stern com

To that end, they’ve
added some taller girls - at

better, Jones said.
“We spent a lot of our
