COURTHOUSE
From page 1A
Sanders said a lot of the
original features were kept
in the renovation, which
also included adding the
metal arched roof.
The former 27,000-
square-foot county court
house was built in 1949 at a
cash price of $325,000. “A
renovation is more difficult
than new construction,”
Sanders said, praising
Hogan Construction for “a
job well done.”
The ceremony Tuesday
included former occupants
of the old courthouse includ
ing guest speakers and
native sons Larry Walker Jr.
and U.S. District Judge

County Commission Chairman Ned Sanders spoke of the
cost of the $2.6 million renovation of the building which
was paid for when it opened 55 years ago at $325,000, as
Perry Mayor Jim Worrall, Commissioner Gail Robinson
and others listen.
Jtt R v
Willis B. Hunt Jr.
Walker told of trying his
first case as an attorney 40
years ago in the building
and of introducing a future
senator, Sam Nunn, to a
future president, Jimmy
Carter, in the basement
records room.
Sanders introduced Hunt
as “a native son who cut his
teeth in the judicial arena in
this building.”
“The reason this country
is most different from the
other is we have courts of
law that are independent of
the president, the governor
and Congress,” Hunt said.
“The attacks today on the
courts are serious and are
disgraceful.”
From the podium at the
steps outside, Hunt added,
“I don’t know much about
engineering, but the air con
ditioning is on inside of the
building.”
County Director of
Operations Tommy
Stalnaker, who was praised
for the success and direction
of the project, apologized for
the heat.
“I didn’t have any control
over that,” he said.
