Houston County.
This year’s contest can’t
come fast enough for Bears
head coach Doug Johnson as
he needs a measuring stick
for his young team.
“This is a game that will
help us evaluate our kids
on both sides of the line
and make any corrections
we will need to make,” said
Johnson. “It is a tough game
to have to play this early in
the season but it does show
you how far you have gone
and how far you need to go.
“It really helped us shake
out the lineup last year and
we expect it to do the same
this time out.”
Johnson admits that the
game is a big one for both
teams for many reasons.
“It is really a bigger
game for us than say the
Northside game,” Johnson
said. “Northside has its own
dedicated feeder schools
while we and Warner Robins
share feeder schools. You
may have a kid who played
quarterback at Feagin Mill
go here while his wide receiv
er went to Warner Robins.
The kids know each other
so that adds a little spice to
the mix.”
“The kids are excited and
we coaches are excited,” he
added. “I am anxious see
how we match up.”
As far as Warner Robins,
head coach Bryan Way said
the Demons would approach
the game just like any other
on their schedule.
“Any time we get out on
the field we want to win,” he
said. “The rivalry certainly
makes for more enthusiasm
among the students and the
players... I’ve noticed a little
more enthusiasm at prac
tice, a little more snap in
the drills. It is easy to tell
there is a rivalry game com
ing up.”
He added the he knew the
Bears would have a very
solid team.
“They are very well
coached,” he said. “They will
try to stop the run on defense
and run it well on offense.
They always play tough on
defense and will not make a
lot of mistakes. Whatever we
get we will have to earn.
“Just like most games, the
team that makes the few
est mistakes will win the
game.”
HoCo holds off Northside in a wild finish

Houston County’s Candice Clark’s
leaping grab of Northside’s LaKeshia
Levi’s bomb preserved the Lady
Bears’ 3-2 win in non-region softball
action Wednesday night.
With two outs and Brittany
Wallace on second, Levi hit a shot
that looked to clear the fence in
straightaway center, but Clark put
her basketball skills to work and
jumped for the ball, landing against
the fence after the catch.
“We hit the ball,” said Northside
head coach Mitch Horton, “but we
didn’t’ get the breaks.”
Oh but they had opportunities in
the final frame.

enth. She had singled in three pre
vious trips to the plate and scored
both Lady Eagles runs.
She hit the second pitch from Lady
Bears’ pitcher Chelsea Burroughs to
deep center but it was flagged down
by Clark for out one.
Kelly Thornburg then belted
Burroughs’ second pitch to the fence
between center and right. Horton
waved her to third as right fielder
Chelsea Leßlanc threw to her relay,
shortstop Kayle Mathews, who in
turn fired a bullet to third baseman
Kaitlyn Carriker for the tag.
“They made a perfect play on it,”
Horton said. “It took a perfect throw
to get her out."
With two down, Wallace doubled
to the same spot and that brought
up cleanup hitter Levi.
“We had two outs, but Brittany was
on second,” said Houston County
head coach Cristi Griffin, “That
wasn’t good. Chelsea (Burroughs),
on the mound, kept her compo
sure.”
Defense was Houston County’s
mantra. Northside had pulled to
within one run, 3-2, in the bottom
of the fifth on three consecutive
singles. Northside had runners and
bases loaded with one out when a
line drive was snagged by Bethany
Crenshaw and turned into a double
play. “I liked the way we reacted
to the pressure,” Griffin said. “I’m
proud of the way we hit the ball.”
Mathews set the offensive tone
along with her defense.

She hit two-out singles in the first
and second inning to drive in runs,
giving Houston County a 2-0 lead
until Hemmer scored for Northside
to pull the Lady Eagles to within 2-1
in the bottom of the third.
All of the Lady Bears’ runs came
after two were out. Their fined
tally came in the fifth when Jessica
Chester walked and scored on
Carriker’s double.
“Our goal this game was to limit
our strikeouts to five,” Griffin said.
“We struck out 14 times last year.
This game we struck out seven
times, but I was proud of the way
we hit the ball. We ceune out hitting
and scored early.”
Houston County remeiins unde
feated at 7-0 while Northside is 1-1.
