Wbman, great is your faith
Recently I have become
aware of the faith that many
of the women in congrega
tions demonstrate. Faith
that exceeds what we
expect. Faith such as is
shown by that certain
Canaanite woman who con
fronts our lord, Son of
David.
This Canaanite woman,
one who is not of the same
background as Jesus and his
followers, asks to be includ
ed in the healing that is
reserved for the Jews. Jesus
tells her, “I have been sent
to the lost sheep of Israel.”
He also delivers one of the
harshest phrases for me to
hear that is recorded n the
gospels. He tells her that it
would not be fair to take the
food intended for the chil
dren (the Israelites) and
give it to he dogs (the
Canaanite). It is hard for me
to read this passage without

QUESTION: Generally
speaking, what kind of
discipline do you use
with a teenager who is
habitually miserable to
live with?
DR. DOBSON: The gener
al rule is to use action - not
anger - to reach an under
standing. Any time you can
get teenagers to do what is
necessary without becoming
furious at them, you are
ahead of the game. Let me
provide a few examples of
how this might be accom
plished:
(1) In Russia, I’m told
that teenagers who are con
victed of using drugs are
denied driver’s licenses for
years. It is a very effective
approach.
(2) When my daughter
was a teenager, she used to
slip into my bathroom and
steal my razor, my shaving
Respecting our friends
My thoughts frequently
turn back a number of years
to a conversation with a
very good friend. The sub
ject is not recalled, nor is the
conversation in its entirety.
Whatever the discussion,
it was to have been kept
between the two of us.
Emphasizing the impor
tance of its being kept confi
dential I cautioned my
friend, “If you repeat this to
anyone, I’ll disown you as a
friend.”
Setting me straight, my
friend promptly replied,
“Well, I just might not want
you for a friend!”
That within itself left a
powerful impact upon my

He also asked for prayers,
saying that his daughter

to her daughter that she was
requesting. What strength
of faith! She sets aside the
barriers of nationality and
race She assumes that she is
as eligible as any to receive
the Christ’s miracle. This
phenomenal faith has been
present in so many through
out the history of our faith.
Think of Miriam placing
Moses in the basket iq the
reeds for Pharaoh’s daugh
ter to find; Samuel’s mother
bargaining with God to give
her a son; John the Baptist’s
mother insisting on his
name being John, almost in
defiance of her husband,
and Mary, behold the hand
maiden of the Lord.
Do we see this type of faith
today? How does a person
achieve this type of faith?
This type of faith is visible
today. You can see it I our
churches and in our history.
Many of the early Christian
room. It was no big deal, but
it was irritating. Can you
identify?
I asked Danae a dozen
times not to do this, to no
avail. Thus, the phantom
struck without warning one
cold morning. I hid every
thing she needed to put on
her “face,” and then left for
the office. My wife told me
she had never heard such
wails and moans as were
uttered that day. Our daugh
ter plunged desperately
through bathroom drawers
looking for her toothbrush,
comb and hair dryer. The
problem never resurfaced.
(3) A family living in a
house with a small hot
water tank was continually
frustrated by their teenag
er’s endless showers.
Screaming at him did no
good. Once he was locked
behind the bathroom door,
tendency of feeling superior
to another is realized. Who
am I that my friendship
should be held in such high
regard?
Had a scripture been quot
ed, it could have been select
ed from Romans 12:3 in
which the Modern Language
translation records these
words of Paul. “Through the
grace that is granted me I
warn each one among you
not to value himself more
highly than he should. ...”
In verse 10 he advises, “Be

martyrs chose to die rather
than to surrender their
faith. Many mothers that I
have met over the years will
continue to pray for and
have faith in a child that
many would declare hope
less. Yet the faith continues
and the miracles still hap
pen. One of the most
intriguing stories is of St.
Monica who prayed for her
son and her husband to be
converted to Christianity
and they were. One of her
sons was St. Augustine.
How is a persbn able to
muster the strength of faith
to push for assistance one of
the most powerful bishops
in the Roman Empire to
help school her son in
Christianity?
Probably the best answer
that question comes from
Madeleine L’Engle, who
wrote in her book, “The
Irrational sSason,” that
he stayed in the steamy stall
until the last drop of warm
water had been drained.
Solution? In midstream,
Dad stopped the flow of hot
water by turning a valve at
the tank. Cold water sud
denly poured from the noz
zle. Junior popped out of the
shower in seconds.
Henceforth, he tried to fin
ish bathing before the faucet
turned frigid.
(4) A single mother could
n’t get her daughter out of
bed in the morning until she
announced a new policy:
The hot water would be shut
off promptly at 6:30 a.m.
The girl could either get up
on time or bathe in ice
water. Another mother had
trouble getting her 8-year
old out of bed each morning.
She then began pouring
bowls of frozen marbles
under the covers with him

“There’s nothing especially
rational about the Gospel
which is entrusted to us.
Every occasion in which we
embrace it is an ‘irrational
season’ in our lives. The love
at its center which can cast
out fear, even the fear of
risking acceptance of such a
trust, is perhaps the most
unreasonable of all that we
have undertaken. For it
means that we remember
ourselves, and that we love
ourselves, and that this
comes before any creative
love we could give to others,
the love that ‘blooms bright
and wild.’”
According to L’Engle, only
when this happens can we
move to the kind of faith
that allows us to put our
selves in the same slot as the
chosen. It allows us to be
instruments of that love and
faith. It allowed Bishop
Desmond Tutu to fight for
each morning. They gravi
tated to wherever his body
lay. The boy arose quite
quickly.

ing at students who drive
too fast, school officials put
huge bumps in the road that
jar the teeth of those who
ignore them. It does the job
quite nicely.
(6) You as the parent have
the car that a teenager
needs, the money that he
covets and the authority to
grant or withhold privileges.
If push comes to shove,
these chips can be
exchanged for commitments
to live responsibly, share the
workload at home and stay
off little brother’s back. This
bargaining process works
for younger kids, too. I like
the “one-to-one” trade-off
for television viewing time.

Mother Teresa reached out
in love to help the suffering
and the dying of India.
However, that love is not
limited to world-renowned
figures. Each day we have
many in our own communi
ty who quietly and without
recognition strive to reach
out in love and help those
who are suffering by feeding
the hungry and helping
those with problems over
come their problems.
When I see this faith in
action I go from the spine
chilling experience of read
ing Matthew 15:26 to the
warm rush of Christ’s love.
In the words of L’Engle,
“Loves blooms bright and
wild in any and all land
scapes, then and now.”
It permits a child to watch
one minute of television for
every minute spent reading.
The possibilities are end
less, and they don’t depend
on anger, threats and
unpleasantness.
