The best Crisp County
years were in the mid-‘9os
with Meiko Collier at quar
terback and a basic I forma
tion.
As the new century began
and the coach’s son Wesley
was running the show. Hill
spread out the field with
four or five wideouts.
That bunch beat Americus
High School’s defending
state championship club in
Americus in 2001.
“In the past they’ve run a
more wide-spread throwing
offense,” said Scott. “This
year they’ve gone to a Wing-
T formation.
"The reason I think he’s
done that is he’s got a lot of
young kids and he’s making
sure he’s protecting the foot
ball. And he’s trying to play
good defense.
“It’s a lot of the same
things we’re trying to do.”
In fact, Scott is looking
for his defense to set the
tone again this Friday after
holding Stephens to seven
points. That score came on a
68-yard running play.
“We have to be sound in
the kicking game and we
cannot turn the ball over
on offense,” said Scott, who
saw the Panthers almost lose
their game-winning opportu
nity on a lost fumble inside
of five minutes to play. “I
feel if we go through a game
Friday night without turn
ing the ball over offensively,
I feel we have a good chance
to win.”
Crisp County won last
year’s game 28-17. Scott
knows that, for things to

he said.
“So the younger players
didn’t get any experience,”
he said. “They haven’t
played before ... that just
adds to it.”
So does having a freshman
at one running back position
and a senior who’s never
played before at the other.
They do have a junior,
Jonathan Baker, at quarter
back but even though he’s
“an athlete,” McGee said,
he’s also a work in progress
- as is the shotgun offense
they’re currently running,
he added.
“He can run,” McGee
said - Northside head coach
Conrad Nix seconded that
saying his ability to scramble
was a big “danger.”
“But,” McGee added. “His
arm is not where it needs
to be and neither are his
reads.”
He has the same problems
on defense. Currently they’re
basing out of a 5-0 - Nix said
they also get in a 4-3 - but he
said that too was more the
fact, “we’re just adjusting to
people right now,” he said.
Of course none of that
seemed to matter last week
end. While the Eagles, who
are 14-1 lifetime against
Carver, were busy dominat
ing Peach County 30-12, the
Tigers were hard at it beat
ing Spencer, a team it also
beat last year, 18-6.

in a throw from quarter
back Casey Hayward, and
the Panthers earned a little
upset, 10-7, against a pre
season top 10 club.
“It felt pretty good,” said
Davis. “I had my whole team
behind me. Casey Hayward,
he was starting the slant to
Montay West, but when they
bit on it, I knew I was there
for the kill.

go better down the road,
his team needs to build off
the momentum of beating
Stephens.
“Even when (Stephens)
scored late, I was proud of
our kids to bounce back like
they did,” said Scott. “Casey
Hayward drove us down the
field and put us in scor
ing position, the poise he
displayed in the pocket late
in the game and being able
to throw the ball to Kenny
(Davis).
"That was a big win for all

Northside head coach Conrad Nix, center, goes over angles/positioning while the team
was working on punt blocking Tuesday at the school.
That provided some
insight, Nix said - the two
exchanged footage, although
he added the Tigers’ was
“not the best (quality)” - but
not enough.
“Spencer did a lot of things
with two split ends,” Nix
said. “Whereas we pretty
much don’t do anything with
two tight ends.”
His assessment then:
“We’ve just got to play to our
level,” he said. “Play hard
“The play call was blue
34.1 really wasn’t (expecting
the pass). My role was to get
in the flat, and everybody bit
on the slant, so I was wide
open.”
Davis said it’s been his
dream to make a game-win
ning play in those final sec
onds.
Those are the kind that
fans will remember for years
to come.
