Poss captures Watermelon's Virgil Forsythe Super Street Shootout
Special to the HHJ
Whether it was the six
foot, first-place trophy or
the guaranteed prize money
of SI,OOO to win, we had a
great turnout for the Virgil
Forsythe Sr. Memorial Race,
read a Watermelon Capital
Speedway release this week.
“Starting with the Mini
stocks and ending with the
claimers there was good door
to door racing in Cordele
this past Saturday night.
We continue to see new cars
at the track and are veiy
encouraged by that fact.”
The night started out with
the Mini-stock division as 12
cars lined up for the feature
race. Mark Rowley of Perry
was sitting on the pole as
the green flag waved, but
Jason Richardson of Cordele
logged the first lap in the
books as the leader. And
then he led one more.
Billy Chancy overtook
Richardson and then held
onto the lead until the check
ered flag dropped on lap 15.
Gene Self of Americus fin
ished second and Bill George
of Flowery Branch came in
third.
Up next were the Legend
Cars. These 1200 cc animals
were buzzing out of turn
four with Ronnie Causey of
Albany sitting on the pole.
As the green flag action
took place over the next few
laps, Causey continued to
lead by only a hair as Jason
Littleton of Cordele, Dusty
Land of Ashburn and Bubba
Harry of Griffin all bit at his
back bumper.
On lap four Littleton,
Land and Jerry Martin of
Alamo got together com
ing out of turn four and all
ended up sideways on the
front straightaway.
Lap five expired with
Harry leading the pack only
to give it up to Beau Slocumb
of Juliette on lap seven.
Slocumb took it to the
house from there and ended
up winning the race by sev
eral car lengths. Harry came
in second and Causey came
in third.
The next class to take
the green flag was the Pure
Stocks with Glen Thompson
of Leesburg sitting on the
pole.
He was challenged imme
diately, however, by Bubba
Burkes of Lizella, Billy
Nipper of Cordele and Ron
Bryant of Leesburg.
Nipper tried to take
Thompson low in turn three
“As far as that,” he said. “If
nobody gets hurt and they
continue to train the way
they’ve been training, they
should be able to do some
thing about that.”
On the boys’ side of the
house, Erpelding said he
was looking for big things
from junior captain Vinny
Gillmore, who has been with
the program all three years.
“He knows pretty much
what he wants to do (on the
course),” Erpelding said.
“And he’s trying to encour
age the rest. He understands
the team goal and wants the
team to do well.”
Also at the forefront in a
leadership role is junior co
captain Josh Milteer.
“He’s got a chance to do
something really special,”
Erpelding said, adding that
Eric Anderson could play a
part - in helping the team
win region and at state
- before it was over with,
as well as Mark Kushinka
and some others, at least a
couple of which are just now
embarking on their cross
country careers this year.
Warner Robins 2005 Cross-country schedule
but could not quite get the
edge he needed and it result
ed in Thompson being spun
out. Nipper then had to go to
the rear under the “Protect
the Leader Rule.”
Thompson rallied all of his
ponies and held on for the
win with Bryant and Burkes
taking second and third.
The Feature event for the
night was the Virgil Forsythe
Super Street Shootout.
There were drivers banging
door to door for the SI,OOO
first place money in that
race.

Warner Robins' girls and boys cross-country teams stretch prior to their run at practice Thursday at Pearl Stephens
Elementary School.
“I think from what I’ve
seen at practices,” he said.
“This group puts in a lot
more effort than others.
“We might have had some
more talented teams, but
I don’t think we’ve ever
had one with a better work
ethic.”
(sponsored by Jones Backhoe
of Cordele) for that effort.
He led for the first 10 laps
of the 40-lap feature as he
and Jay Poss of Macon bat
tled back and forth.
Poss took over on lap 11
and never looked back as he
took the payday.
Woodward finished sec
ond and Buck Rhoden of
Pineview drove the best race
to date for him as he fin
ished third. Jason Price of
Andersonville and Wayne
Barfield of Byron came in
fourth and fifth.
Last but certainly not least
were the “wild guys” in the
Claimer Cars.

Head coach David Erpelding goes over some administrative details.
If you looked at the scor
er’s sheet, you would say it
was a dull race.
“Well ladies and gentle
men that is why you must
be here in person to see this
race,” the release said. They
all started from a dead start
with the official pole being
given to Josh Taylor.
As they roared into turn
one Amos Farmer of Unadilla
came barreling in for the
lead but could not come out
in the same place as he went
spinning up the track.
Taylor resumed the
lead but then had to con
tend with Benji Cromer of
Andersonville.
