“We just need to cut out

“Offensively and defensive

Against Windsor, the

“They’re really a good
football team,” Northside
head coach Conrad Nix said
in reference to both then
and now. “They play hard.
They’re good and quick and
have a lot of speed. They’re
an all-around good football
team.
“And not just in certain
areas. They’re good every
where.”
They may have even just
gotten stronger at one area:
Quarterback.
They lost standout signal
caller, Rondrick Coggins
and then after one game,
they lost his replacement,
Cortez Hastings. Now Bobby
Rainey, a converted run
ning back who had almost
800 yards last year, has the
reigns.
The bad news (not Bears):
“To be honest, he may be
better than their other one,”
Nix said. “He’s more elusive
(a lot more than Carver’s
scrambling quarterback, he
added). He’s more of a run
ner.
“It looks like they’re able
to do a lot more with him in
there.”

of the ball - including the
entire offensive line and
they’re all seniors - doesn’t
hurt.
Running plays from that
set must also be a compli
ment because they Bears,
like the Eagles, are 2-0.
They edged Heritage
14-7 in their opener and
then waxed eloquent on
Banneker, a AAA school, 40-
8, this past week.
“They’ll run a lot of shot
gun and some under center
stuff,” Nix said. “It’s all just
misdirection type stuff.”
Indeed it is, according to
Griffin head football coach
Steve Devoursney. Nix said in
the game tapes he watched,
the Bears didn’t base out
of anything, “they’re more
multiple than anything,” he
said, but Devoursney said
their primary offense is the
Wing-T.
On defense, Devoursney,
who added they’re pretty
beat up on both sides of the
ball, base out of a 4-3.
Their line is anchored by
senior Tyler Ogletree and
sophomore Tobey Jackson
- the latter of which has
been compared by coach
es, according to one media
report, to the NFL’s John
Sullivan.
“They (the defense in gen
eral) move around a good
bit,” said Nix, adding the
Bears’ coaches made a “tre
mendous” amount of chang
es from their first game to
the second. “They do a bit of
slanting and various things.
They’ll line up on the wide
side and just do different
things ... Things we’re going
to have to get our head up
and recognize.”
“Hopefully,” he added.
“We’ll be able to move the
football and not get frus
trated when they do some of
their stunt stuff. Hopefully
we’ll catch them (in the
wrong place at the wrong
time) and make some big
plays to counteract what
they’re doing.”
Another element that
may come into play: Crowd
noise.
Devoursney said they
drew 5,000 last week and
because Northside is ranked
(No. 5) and Griffin is ranked
(No. 4), the figure he said
he is being told to expect is
9,000.
“I’ll put it to you this way,”
he said. “If they get here
late, they’re going to be left
standing on the outside.”
