A few more points on pharmacy transfers
In last week’s column, in
response to a reader ques
tion, I wrote about transfer
ring prescriptions from one
pharmacy to another. After
the column ran, I was
reminded by some of my
pharmacist friends of two
issues regarding prescrip
tion transfers that I did not
address.
One of the issues has to do
with prescriptions for con
trolled substances (i.e.,
Ativan, Lortab, Xanax, etc.).
I did mention last week that
some states do not allow
transfers of controlled sub
stance prescriptions, espe
cially if from another state.
However, what I did not
note was that, by law, pre
scriptions for controlled
substances can be trans
ferred from one pharmacy to
another only one time. This
means that all subsequent
refills of that prescription
must be obtained from the
pharmacy to which the pre
scription transfer went.
This is to help prevent
abuse of controlled sub
stances by keeping prescrip
tion filling records in as few
pharmacies as possible. This
makes it easier for regulato
ry agencies to track dispens
ing of controlled substances.

Senior Airman Jason Young of Warner Robins soloed on Aug. 11 at the Perry-Houston
County Airport in a Cessna 172 owned by Central Georgia Aviation. Here, Young’s T
shirt is cut off in keeping with an old aviation tradition for the student to thank his
instructor by giving him the shirt off his back. The instructor cutting the shirt off is Lt.
Col. Ben Sutton of Warner Robins.

Navy Seaman Jared L.

Givens of Warner Robins,
and nephew of Rick Kramer
of Edmond, Okla., recently
completed U.S. Navy basic
training at Recruit Training
Command, Great Lakes, 111.
During the eight-week
program, Givens completed
a variety of training, which
included classroom study
and practical instruction on
naval customs, first aid, fire
fighting, water safety and
survival, and shipboard and
aircraft safety. An emphasis
was also placed on physical
fitness.
The capstone event of boot
camp is “Battle Stations”.

And believe me, these
records are closely tracked.
The other issue I did not
address is that pharmacies
are not legally obligated to
transfer a prescription to
another pharmacy. In other
words, if a prescription is
filled at one pharmacy
(Pharmacy A), and another
pharmacy (Pharmacy B)
calls to request a transfer
(or “a copy” in pharmacy
jargon), Pharmacy A does
not have give the informa
tion to Pharmacy B.
This is very rare. Usually,
pharmacies transfer pre
scriptions to and from each
other on a regular basis.
This is, however, just a pro-

fessional courtesy and not a
legal obligation. Sometimes
the pharmacy being called
for the “copy” has a specific
reason that they would pre
fer not to transfer a pre
scription out, and they have
the right to refuse. As I said
though, this is very rare, but
it is within the pharmacist’s
purview.
If you should have to
transfer a prescription from
one pharmacy to another,
please keep in mind that the
process does take a little
time to complete. If possible,
try to anticipate »your need
and request your transfer a
few days before you are com
pletely out of medication.
Also, it helps to have the
phone number of the phar
macy you’d like the pre
scription transferred from
as well as the prescription
number and the name of the
medication. This can help
make the transfer go more
smoothly.
It’s also important to let
the pharmacist who is call
ing for the “copy” know if
you have any prescription
insurance coverage when
you request the transfer.
This can help avoid unnec
essary delays or confusion

When you do pick up your
prescription, take a look at
it before leaving the phar
macy, especially if you take a
generic brand of medication.
The pharmacy that filled
your prescription may stock
a different version from the
one the original pharmacy
carried and it may look dif
ferent.
Be sure to clarify any
questions about your med
ication with the pharmacist
who filled your prescription.
And remember, it’s best to
always get all of your pre
scriptions filled at the same
pharmacy every time. This
helps your pharmacist truly
become your pharmacist.

DOHATIN6 YOUR CAR
Donating a car is a wonderful way of giving to
charity. You can claim a tax deduction for the value
of the car. Most charities sell the cars at auctions to
raise money. Under new legislation in 2005, that tax
deduction is limited to the amount at which the char
ity sells the vehicle. Perry Volunteer Outreach does
not sell donated vehicles, we give the cars away to
needy families. Therefore the tax deduction can be
based on the car’s “blue book” or other reasonable
appraisal. To find out more - call PVO at 218-2274.
